Accessibility StatementOhlone College seeks to make all programs and services, including electronic and information technology, accessible to people with disabilities. In this spirit, and in accordance with the provisions of Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the College provides students, faculty, staff, and visitors with reasonable accommodations to ensure equal access to the programs and activities of the College. Individuals with disabilities should contact Disabled Students Programs and Services for assistance. The Vice President of Administrative Services serves as compliance officer for student matters concerning ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) regulations.
Alternate Media ServicesOhlone College provides Alternate Media services to qualified students who need materials in alternative formats such as Braille, large print, audiotape, or electronic text. For additional information, please contact Disabled Students Programs and Services at (510) 659-6079. Web AccessibilityOhlone College is committed to providing web pages that meet Section 508 guidelines for web accessibility. Section 508 requires that individuals with disabilities have access to and use of information and data that is comparable to that provided to the public who are not individuals with disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on us. Toward that end, each of the top-level ("core") pages on the main Ohlone College website and all other web pages managed by the College's Web Team meet Priority 1 accessibility guidelines. In addition, Ohlone College's Alternate Media Specialist, Kevin Kirk (kkirk@ohlone.edu) and the Web Team are available to educate faculty and staff on accessibility concerns including information about Section 508 requirements for web page content. The Ohlone College website includes features designed to improve accessibility for all site visitors (see list below). In addition, a list of Common Acronyms and Abbreviations used on the Ohlone College website is available. For the benefit of our visitors, the Ohlone College website contains links to third party sites not operated by Ohlone College. Such sites are not within the control of Ohlone College and may not follow the same privacy, security, or accessibility policies as Ohlone College. Ohlone College is not responsible for the content or availability of those sites, their partners, or advertisers. If you are having difficulty accessing an Ohlone College web page, we would like to know so that we may evaluate the page for accessibility. This aids visitors who listen to the content of the site using a screen reader, rather than visually reading the site, as well as visitors who view web pages with the image setting turned off in their web browser. Purely decorative graphics are marked with a null/empty "alt" attribute. Complex images include a "(D)" or "(d)" link next to the image or a "longdescr" (long description) attribute on the image tag; each of these link to a text-only description to explain the image to non-visual readers. Multimedia: Video, AudioVideo and audio files made available on the Ohlone College website should be either captioned or accompanied by a link to a text transcript. In some cases, such as a dance performance video or music without audio, a description of the video or the source information (such as title, author, date) is supplied. Although the archived video from Board of Trustees meetings, ONTV Newscasts, and other video/audio webcasts are not at this time captioned or accompanied by a text transcript, the College is researching a solution. Navigation"Skip to" links at the top of a web page provide a method for bypassing the header and going directly to the main content or to the side navigation each time a page is accessed. PDF FilesThere are links to Portable Document Format (PDF) files throughout the College website. Some of these PDF files may not be compliant with screen readers devices, depending on the age of the PDF file, the software used to create the PDF file, and the knowledge/skillset of the person using the software. Adobe Systems, Inc., has improved the accessibility features of their Adobe Acrobat software and has developed resources to improve access to Adobe PDF files. For additional information, please visit Adobe's Accessibility website (http://access.adobe.com/). Web StandardsAll web pages managed by the Web Team use XHTML 1.0 Transitional markup and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Visual LayoutBecause the College still has computers with only the Netscape 4.x browser installed (we are in the process of upgrading those computers), the website uses a hybrid approach to design and layout: HTML tables are used for layout and Cascading Style Sheets are used to control font style, font size, colors, and other stylistic elements. Browser PluginsPlugins are add-on web browser applications that enable a web browser to access non-web file formats, such as PDF, word processing, spreadsheet, movie, audio, and multimedia. Some pages on the Ohlone College website link to types of files that require a browser plugin in order to open the file. A list of browser plugins and links to their author (manufacturer) sites are below. You may need the assistance of your organization's system administrator to install these programs.
