Ohlone College Gets Grant for Deaf Studies Lab

$200,000 from East Bay Community Foundation

Fremont, CA - A $200,000 grant from the East Bay Community Foundation (EBCF) to Ohlone College will furnish and equip a newer, more fully developed Deaf Studies/American Sign Language (ASL) Computer Laboratory at Ohlone College.

Announced jointly by College President Dr. Gari Browning and EBCF President & Chief Executive Officer Nicole Taylor, the computer and language lab will serve deaf and hard-of-hearing students, ASL learners and ASL interpreters enrolled in Deaf Studies courses at Ohlone.

"This donation provides a crucial opportunity for the ASL Language Lab to give our Deaf and ASL students intensive language interaction that contributes to academic language development and social change," said Dr. Genie Gertz, Dean of the Deaf Studies Division at Ohlone. "In turn, this donation makes a significant contribution not only to the Deaf community, but also to the general cultural life of the society in which we all live."

The gift came through the foundation, which received the money from the estate of Evelyn Henderson, a former teacher of deaf students.

"We're pleased that Evelyn Henderson trusted us to fulfill her wish to assist the post-secondary education of deaf students with her estate," said Taylor. "Because of East Bay Community Foundation's knowledge of and familiarity with programs and organizations in Alameda and Contra Costa counties, Ohlone College was promptly chosen as the recipient that could best utilize this grant to benefit the Deaf community."

It is anticipated that the facility will include 40 computer work stations and will serve more than 650 students who are enrolled in the Deaf Studies Division each year. The College hopes for the lab to begin serving students as early as fall 2010. The grant allows the College to move forward with its long -term plans to improve facilities for the Deaf Studies Division. Existing rooms will be modified into one large computer laboratory, complete with appropriate infrastructure and wiring to accommodate the technology and software to complete this project.

Evelyn Henderson was a former employee at the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, before it moved to Fremont in 1980. The School for the Deaf offers instructional and support services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students from early childhood through high school. It is a separate institution from the College's Deaf Studies program, but the two institutions partner on deaf-related educational issues.

According to her former husband, Malcolm Henderson, Evelyn Henderson began working at the School for the Deaf in the late 1940s after graduating from University of California at Los Angeles. She discovered that she had a facility for learning and using ASL, he said. She worked with high-school-level students for a number of years at the School for the Deaf, at the Arizona School for the Deaf and in Los Angeles public schools before health problems limited her teaching activities. She was 80 when she died.

Her estate, which she entrusted to the foundation, came from a family inheritance, Malcolm Henderson said.

Taylor noted that in addition to fulfilling the legacy of the late Evelyn Henderson, the grant also is consistent with the foundation's focus on education to advance economic opportunity for East Bay populations in need.

The funds from the East Bay Community Foundation will be paid to the Ohlone College Foundation, a 501c3 organization (non-profit status in the U.S. Internal Revenue code) that exists to provide scholarships and other funding support to assist students and broaden educational opportunities and programs at Ohlone College.

The East Bay Community Foundation (www.eastbaycf.org) connects community needs in Alameda and Contra Costa counties with individuals, families and organizations interested in charitable giving -- and acts as a catalyst for change through leading initiatives, through advocacy, and through partnerships with business, government, and private foundations. Formed in 1928, the Foundation is a leading resource on charitable giving and community needs, stewarding more than 400 charitable funds and endowments.

Ohlone College student soaring onto a national stage in Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown

Spotlight on Ohlone

Ohlone College student Carlos Smothers soaring onto a national stage in Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown

By Carl Steward.

Friday, February 12, 2010 - Inside Bay Area: The Oakland Tribune .

In a development that is long overdue, NBA All-Star Weekend is opening its dunk competition to the masses. For the first time, high-flying regular joes will have their own dunk event alongside the pros today.

The timing is certainly right for Union City's Carlos Smothers, who was one of four men selected in a nationwide search - and the only one picked straight from his online video entry - to compete in the inaugural Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown.

The event will immediately precede the NBA players' dunk contest and will be shown on NBA.TV at 3 p.m.

The 21-year-old Smothers, a James Logan High grad now attending Ohlone College, has won some local dunk contests in recent years but admitted he still can't fathom what it will be like dunking at the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

"I've been in competitions before, but nothing of this magnitude with something like 100,000 people projected to be there," said Smothers. "It's like, 'Wow.'"

As if the venue doesn't provide enough pressure, Smothers and the other three finalists will be judged by LeBron James, former NBA power-dunk specialist Darryl Dawkins and underground hip-hop star Drake, with the winner to receive $10,000.

While contestants in eight cities from around the country - including San Francisco - were slamming head-to-head in recent months trying to be one of eight regional finalists, Smothers simply submitted an online video put together by some friends at BallIsLife.com . The video, with some of his dynamic dunks, propelled Los - his dunk moniker - into the semifinals.

Online voters then swept him into the finals over the past few weeks, perhaps checking out a number of his other dunking videos on YouTube.

"I didn't think I really had a chance, but I told a lot of my friends to vote for me," he said. "I guess it paid off."

Smothers played basketball as a freshman and sophomore at James Logan, but he bypassed his final two seasons because he said he didn't get along with the varsity coach. He hasn't played any college ball, but maintains he's still looking for a shot and believes he's worthy. At present, he plays in an adult league and gets in his share of streetball.

"I think I'm actually a better basketball player than I am a dunker," he said. "I just do it because I can do it, but I'd rather play basketball on a team any day."

Smothers started dunking in the eighth grade as a 13-year-old and realized he had a talent for it, getting high above the rim even though he wasn't that tall. Even now, he barely stands 6-foot-1.

"I don't work out with my legs or nothing," he said. "It's all natural ability."

Smothers' signature dunk is a 360-degree throwdown between the legs off two feet. Many of the best dunkers can perform that, but Smothers can go between the legs with either hand. He'll have a dozen or so other possibilities to choose from during today's finals.

He confessed that he and two other competitors - one from Los Angeles, one from North Carolina - are probably underdogs against Taurian "Air Up There" Fontenette from Hitchcock, Texas, who will not only be the local favorite but is the only dunker in history who has a documented 720-degree dunk on tape. That's right, two full body turns in the air before the slam.

"He's one of the best dunkers in the world," Smothers said. "So I'm just going to do what I do best, which is have fun, do my best dunks and hopefully I'll come out victorious. Maybe he (Fontenette) will sprain an ankle and miss all of his."

If nothing else, his five-day trip to the Dallas area is all-expenses paid, not only for him but his best friend, and they'll have choice seats for Sunday's All-Star Game.

Smothers is a die-hard Warriors fan who is still upset Monta Ellis didn't make the all-star squad. He was equally steamed when Baron Davis and Jason Richardson weren't picked in recent years, particularly Richardson, who once gave Smothers dunking tips at a basketball camp.

"I think the NBA has something against the Warriors," he said. "I guess with our record, we can't complain, but I'm still mad."

A winning dunk and a photo with LeBron would do much to ease his anger, he said. Maybe just the photo.

Participants will receive abundant hands-on training/practice on how to wire together a system so that it is durable, safe, and functional. Participants will also learn how to test such systems and to service them.

Participants will have the option to build their own portable solar electric system. It will fit into a suitcase and can be sized to deliver a minimum of 20 to 60 watts of electricity, depending on need and budget. Students wishing to build a system they take with them will need to inform us at least one month in advance. This will allow us to assist in the design of a system appropriate for individual needs, and order the necessary components.
Ohlone College Foundation is now featuring the new scholarship program, HOSTS - Helping One Student To Succeed. This program allows donors to help a student afford college without demanding a large financial commitment from the donor. A HOSTS donor commits to one amount, $500 to help one student through one semester. The scholarship bears the donor's name. And each donor has an opportunity to meet the student they sponsor.

A single contribution of $500 to Ohlone College Foundation HOSTS scholarship program will provide one full-time Ohlone College student with a full semester of tuition, with a little left over for books and supplies.

If you would like to be a HOSTS sponsor, please contact Ohlone College Foundation at (510) 659-6020 or by emailing thsu@ohlone.edu. You can also visit our website at http://foundation.ohlone.edu for more information.
The Chamber Singers have traveled to ten different countries on eight international tours and have performed in some of the most remarkable cathedrals in the world. However, they consider Mission San Jose their home and their most enjoyable performance venue. Over the years, the Christmas at the Mission concerts have grown to be an annual family tradition for many audience members who enjoy the intimacy of the setting and the almost mystical acoustics of the Mission.

This year's concert follows in the tradition of previous performances, allowing for plenty of opportunities for the audience to join the choir in familiar carols. This year's selections feature music composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, contemporary arrangements of familiar carols, and a surprise or two (à la King's Singers)! For an additional treat the beautiful pipe organ, positioned in the Mission’s balcony, will be played by Chamber Singers’ accompanist Janet Holmes. This is an annual event not to be missed, and a new tradition to add to your holiday celebration.

The Ohlone College Chamber Singers are a 32-voice auditioned choir performing a wide range of choral pieces for the past twenty years throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and Europe. The group was founded in 1985 by Ohlone College music professor Dennis L. Keller, who continues to serve as the conductor of the choral group.

For more information contact Jackie Whitehouse at 510-659-6158.

Roumanis has arranged music for television shows such as Twilight Zone, Mission Impossible, and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Now adding to his repertoire is this special holiday song composed for the Ohlone College Wind Orchestra.

George Roumanis has conducted and arranged music for Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Sammy Davis, Jr. He fell in love with jazz at age 12 and soon became a jazz bassist. At age 18 he began playing with the big bands of Benny Goodman, Charlie Spivak, Les Brown, and Tommy Dorsey. After years on the jazz scene he moved from New York to Hollywood to compose and conduct scores for television and motion pictures. Since then, he has moved to Half Moon Bay, and his focus has expanded to classical music and opera composition.

Along with the debut of Roumanis’ piece, Christmas Extravaganza features the Ohlone Community Band, Wind Orchestra, and Tuba Ensemble, directed by Tony Clements, and includes special guest the Silicon Valley Brass Band. Many well-known Christmas anthems will be showcased including “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “Up on the Housetop,” “Go Tell it on the Mountain,” and “Festival of Lights.” Zawinul’s “Birdland” and selections from “Pirates of the Caribbean” are also featured.

For more information or a complete list of concert pieces, please contact Jackie Whitehouse at 510-659-6158 or visit www.smithcenterpresents.com.
