Individuals shine light during Fremont Out of Darkness Walk, Mercury News: Fremont Bulletin, May 3, 2012

By Shannon Barry.

Thursday, May 3, 2012—Reprinted from Mercury News: Fremont Bulletin.

Christiana Dawson Brands and Cathy Dawson each held a dove close to their heart before letting go, watching as they soared high above Ohlone College last week in memory of a loved family member lost to suicide.

The Greater San Francisco Bay Area Chapter for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention sponsored Ohlone College's second annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk April 24. The inaugural walk was held in honor of Stewart Dawson, a six-year security guard and former alumnus there who committed suicide Dec. 28, 2010.

Jimmy Dempsey, owner of the birds and an Ohlone facilities employee, arranged the release of 25 doves during the event as his way to remember Dawson.

"We miss him, we miss him a lot and it's nice to see that something good can come out of something so tragic," Brands said during the opening ceremony.

She was part of 11 people on "Team Stewie" who each wore personalized T-shirts with pictures of him on the front and back in addition to inscribed messages "We miss you Stew" and "You are always in our hearts."

Her son Grant, born the day of the walk last year, was a part of the crew that led the way for the 90 participants making the 3.2-mile loop that day.

Colleagues of Dawson also each released doves in his honor, sharing their sentiments briefly with those at the opening ceremony.

"He was extremely loved by everybody," Gwen Murphy, a campus security guard, said. "If you knew him, you could never forget him. ... He's left a
  great big hole for everybody."

Campus security guard James Keogh spoke about the importance of noticing signs of depression and suicide, before it is too late.

"Take care of those that you love," he said. "Don't be afraid to say something. If you see something, notify someone else, talk to them directly. It's just important that you step forward."

Brands said awareness provided through activities like the walk is key when it comes to suicide prevention.

"I think until you experience it, it's something that most people are not aware of and don't want to talk about it even because we're not quite sure how to handle it," she said. "So an event like this is so very important to get people out talking about it and saying there are things we can do to help prevent this."

Ron Travenick, Ohlone's vice president of student development, said by participating that day people including Brands were "individual lights" shining on a dark issue.

"Stephen King and Edgar Allen Poe and all those great horror writers knew something very important about fear, and that was what we don't know and what's in the dark is the greatest fear of all," he said. "Today what you're doing with your own light and coming out and being present on the campus, brings something that touches the entire world out into discussion."

Kevin Feliciano, a former Associated Student Body president of Ohlone College, shared his own experience.

"Jan. 11, 2008 was a day that changed my life," he said. "It was a day where I thought there was nowhere else to go, there was nothing else to do but end my life. I had two really good friends who were with me the entire time that helped bring me out of it and ever since then, that was the day I decided I was going to do more for those around me. ... We're the leading campus in the state for suicide prevention, so I am very happy to be on a campus like this."

Sally Bratton, director of student health at Ohlone, said $3,610 has been raised to date with fund-raising open through June 1. The monies allow Ohlone to continue with the foundation's Interactive Screening Program, an online screening tool used to assess a student's risk of suicide.

"It is sent out to random students each semester," she said. "This spring we sent it to 60 students and within an hour had three responses who were very high risk. We were able to get back to them the same day to offer counseling and help."

Ohlone is the only community college currently using the program.

Fremont, CA—Nearly 200 Latino/Latina students from local high schools attended Ohlone College's 7th Annual RAZA Day to learn the importance of pursuing their future through education. Raza Day works with underrepresented student populations and has many goals. One goal is to help students understand the process of attending college, from financial aid, to registration, to education plans. Another goal is to help them build a network of support at college where they know other students, faculty and advisors who share their background and experiences who can provide advice and friendship and encouragement. A third goal is to help them to redirect their path toward education in order to provide themselves with more choices about their future.

Caring and experienced faculty, counselors, faculty, and professionals who have traveled this road and found success work hard to put this program together and work with the students to help them understand all their options.

Five-time Grammy nominee and US Artist Fontales Fellow, John Santos was the keynote speaker, and discussed the power of music for change and unity. The event featured informative workshops, financial aid information, college programs, careers and services, gender gatherings, testimonials from current and past students, as well as entertainment by Aztec Dancers. Students were also introduced to the strong network of support that exists at Ohlone to assist students as they make the transition from high school to college.

So says Ohlone College professor Maru Grant who, along with other science, engineering and math professors at Ohlone, are trying to light up the inner scientific spark in high school students, especially in underrepresented populations, by hosting STEM Awareness Day at the College. Ohlone College hosts STEM (or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Awareness Day for local high schools, inviting a different group each year. Students from Newark Memorial and Bridgepoint High Schools are attending this week.

As part of the day's activities, students are placed into teams of twelve, and participate in a variety of hands-on activity sessions in the fields of Chemistry, Engineering, Biotechnology and Information Technology. Students receive a certificate attendance and compete to win prizes.

A number of distinguished guests will speak at the event, Including the President of Ohlone College, Dr. Gari Browning, the Superintendent of Schools from Newark, Dave Marken, representatives from the City of Newark including the Mayor, Al Nagy, and Vivien Larsen, the President of Avanzando, which is assisting with this event, Patti Carothers, the Director of the Alameda County Science and Engineering Fair, will address how students can participate in the science fair.

The goal of STEM Awareness day is to inspire the students to explore Ohlone College's STEM Pathway Program. This program prepares both middle school and high school students for entry into one of the STEM pre-baccalaureate degree programs. It also gives students the opportunity to take courses in high school while receiving college credits, many of which will transfer for credit at both California State University and the University of California systems. The event is sponsored by Ohlone College, the Rotary Club of Newark and Avanzando.

Ohlone College Original Dance Production Celebrates the Art of Movement

Fremont, CA—Dancers…What moves them? What inspires them? Who are they? Dance about…Dance for…Dance because…Experience the performance from inside of the dancer looking out.

"Dance…" the Spring Dance Production, peeks into the mind of a dancer and presents a show that celebrates the art of movement. This latest production by the Theater and Dance Department, directed by Janel Tomblin-Brown, pays tribute to all dancers, their motivations, aspirations and devotion to their craft.

The performance is divided into two acts. The first act focuses on the expression of dance as a way to channel and express feelings. From bullying to overcoming fears- the faculty and student choreographers explore the power of dance and the creativity of choreography to showcase scenarios where dance is used as an outlet for expression of internal triumphs, struggles and joy. The second act is comprised of two suites. One of fantasy and the other of reality. The first suite opens in the magical realm of imagination and fantasy while the second suite shines light on the dancer as an individual, highlighting the variety of individual dance styles and interpretation.

Tickets are available online or at the box office. Please visit smithcenter.com, or call the Smith Center Box Office at (510) 659-6031 for more information.

Ohlone College Continues to Raise Awareness about Suicide Prevention with Second Annual Campus Walk

Fremont, CA—Depression is one of the leading causes of suicide today, and has taken the lives of many. To raise awareness about depression and suicide prevention Ohlone College, in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will hold the Second Annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk at Ohlone College in Fremont.

Last year, the event was held in memory of Stewart Dawson, a well known and respected Ohlone staff member. More than 150 faculty, staff, students and community members attended the walk and raised $2500, surpassing the initial fundraising goal of $1,000. This year, Stewart Dawson's mother, his sister, and one-year-old nephew will join the walk this year as "Team Stewie," and welcome anyone to join their team.

With an overwhelming outcome and support from the community last year, Ohlone College hopes to make this year's event even more successful. There is no cost to participate in the walk, but the goal is to collectively raise $3,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Each registrant will be provided with their own webpage to help with fundraising efforts and tracking progress. All are welcome to participate in the walk, volunteer, or donate to the cause through the event website.

This event is sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the Ohlone College Student Health Center, and the ASOC (Associated Students of Ohlone College). For more information about registering or donating, please contact Sally Bratton at sbratton@ohlone.edu or visit the event website at www.ohlone.edu/go/campuswalk.

Ohlone College Celebrates 40 Years of Service to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community

Fremont, CA—For forty years, the Language and Culture Center for Deaf Studies at Ohlone College has opened the doors to educational and occupational opportunities for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Inspired by the leadership of George Attletweed and other visionary educators, the Deaf Studies Division at Ohlone College allowed for Deaf students in the area to continue their education at an institution for higher learning. Since its founding in 1972, the Deaf Studies Division has continued to grow and has expanded to include instruction in ASL and an Interpreter Preparation Program (IPP).

The Deaf Studies Division was established in 1972 when the college reached out to thirty Deaf and Hard of Hearing students to join the Ohlone College learning community. Since then, the division has grown to serve more than 200 Deaf and Hard of Hearing students each year and 420 ASL and IPP students. It is one of the largest and most comprehensive programs in the West, with award winning faculty, and a new state-of-the-art Language Lab. The division has a national and international reputation for excellence in education with their collaboration with Japan (JASS and the Nippon Foundation), Sweden, and visitors from all over the world. All faculty and staff are fluent in American Sign Language, trained in the areas of Deaf Education and/or Rehabilitation Counseling, and are sensitive to the diverse cultural and educational background of the students.

Everyone is invited to celebrate the forty years of commitment to education with the Deaf Studies Division at Ohlone College.
The Deaf Studies Division at Ohlone College cordially invites you to join us in celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Ohlone College Language and Culture Center for Deaf Studies. In 1972, under the inspired leadership of George Attletweed and other visionary educators, the Deaf Studies Division at Ohlone College was opened as a way for Deaf students in the area to continue their education at an institution for higher learning. This led to the growth of language instruction in ASL and the Interpreter Preparation Program.

Now 40 years later, we invite you to join us in celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Language and Culture Center for Deaf Studies at Ohlone College. On Thursday, April 19, visit the largest and most comprehensive Deaf Studies Program in the West. Meet the award-winning faculty, visit classrooms and programs and see our new state-of the-art lab. This event is sponsored by Ohlone College and Sorenson Communications.

For more information contact Nora Chopelas at nchopelas@ohlone.edu, (510) 659-6269 (v) or (510) 344-5700 (vp) or visit http://www.ohlone.edu/deafstudies.
Friday, April 13, 2012—Reprinted from Tri-City Voice.

You dream of traveling the world but don't know where to start. Traveling can be expensive and you have no idea how to get around on your own.

This is the same way I felt as a young undergraduate student before learning about a study abroad program to Cambridge University offered through Ohlone College. "My whole world changed, and it changed for the better. A decade later I am still in contact with my host family and friends from around the world. I've traveled to over 20 countries and don't plan on stopping anytime soon!

There are many misconceptions about studying abroad. Programs are no longer exclusive to the wealthy. Study abroad participants vary in age from young adults to retirees. Programs run from as long as a year to as little as a week.

If you've ever dreamed of traveling the world, a study abroad program can be the step in the right direction. Look at a variety of programs and decide what factors are important to you. Are you looking for a long- or short-term study abroad program? What region of the world excites your interest? How much structure versus free time would you prefer during a program?

For decades Ohlone College has served as the wings of flight for many students. Participants have climbed the Harbor Bridge in Sydney, Australia, studied theatre in London, England, and visited global corporations in Shanghai, China.

Ohlone College business students visit a Caterpillar manufacturing plant in Suzhou, China. —Photo by Candace Nance.

In June last year, I led a three-week Global Business Immersion study abroad program to China. Ten participants visited over a dozen businesses, including the American Chamber of Commerce, Bao Steel, Deloitte, and General Electric. The program included a variety of cultural visits in Shanghai, Suzhou and Wuxi, China.

This year Ohlone College is offering our community opportunities to: study European business in Ireland (August 2012), tour the breathtaking Iguazu Falls in Argentina (January 2013), and develop your creative process studying art and literary destinations in London and Paris (June 2013).

Experience what the world has to offer. Visit www.ohlone.edu/studyabroad or contact Candice Nance at CNance@ohlone.edu and get started on filling your passport, one stamp at a time.

World Famous Magician and Escape Artist Reveals the Science of Magic at Ohlone College

Fremont, CA—World famous magician and escape artist, James Randi "The Amazing Randi" reveals the psychology behind prophesies, divination, and faith healing. An author, lecturer, and tireless investigator of spurious and extraordinary claims of supernaturalism, Randi has devoted his life to science and skepticism by sharing his conclusions with the public.

James Randi is the media's advisor on claims of the paranormal, pseudoscience, and occult. A world renowned magician and escape artist, he has been featured in TV specials in the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, amongst other. He is the founder of the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF), which offers $1 million to anyone who can show, under proper observed conditions, evidence of any paranormal, supernatural, or occult power. After hundreds of attempts by various people, the prize remains unclaimed and the foundation provides education and funds to encourage people to think critically about pseudoscientific and paranormal claims.

Why do people spend billions of dollars on after-dark infomercials, faith healing and other "religious" services or psychic predictions? Discover the real truth behind the magic of the paranormal with James Randi, as part of Ohlone College Psychology Club Series, funded in part by the Associated Students of Ohlone College (ASOC). Theatre seating is sold out, but overflow tickets are available for a live telecast viewing of the presentation at the Ohlone College TV studio located in Smith Center at Ohlone College.
Annual High School Theatre Festival at Ohlone College Attracts Over 800 Students Across State

Fremont, CA—Hundreds of students flock to the Ohlone College campus in Fremont, CA each year for the high school theatre festival. This year is no exception—over 800 participants were bused in from 35 high schools across the state. The festival is a two- day event starting at noon on Friday and then winding up on Saturday with a final showing for all the winners at the end of the day. Five counties are represented including Alameda, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Mateo, Marin and even Nevada Union High School from up in the Gold Country.

Students compete in multiple categories from drama to comedy to musical. There is even Tech Olympics for lighting, sound and computerized equipment. Almost 150 judges join forces to provide commentary, helpful critique and, of course, award the prizes.

The competition has been taking place for 18 years now, the brainchild of Theater Professor Tom Blank. Blank says, “It’s great to see the enthusiasm and team spirit that these kids have. It’s been on the verge of rain all day, but nothing seems to dampen their spirit!”

The big winners at the end of the event were Westmoor High School in Daly City (Spirit), Oakland School of the Arts (Tech Sweepstakes), new-comer Novato/Marin School of the Arts (Judges Sweepstakes), and Lowell from San Francisco (Overall Sweepstakes). Local Fremont schools Washington and Irvington also placed high in all events.

Trustees Approve Construction on Ohlone College Solar Panel Project

Fremont, CA—Last Wednesday, March 14th, at the Ohlone College Board Meeting, the Trustees voted to approve construction of the first major project for the Measure G bond. The Bond passed in November 2010, providing $349 million dollars to upgrade aging facilities at the Fremont campus and some additional upgrades to the Newark campus.

The project will build a 1 megawatt solar farm on the Fremont campus. It will allow the college to take advantage of the energy savings from moveable PV panels. It will be constructed on approximately five acres of property on the south side of campus where the former soccer field stands.

The photovoltaic field will consist of an array of crystalline solar panels or modules that are fitted with tracking systems and motors allowing them to rotate during daylight hours to maximize energy production.

Just in time for new construction to begin on the Ohlone College Fremont campus, Ohlone is pleased to welcome a new Director of Facilities, Thomas Moore. Moore, recently of UC San Diego, brings years of facilities management and construction experience to the college and to the major projects that will be funded by Measure G.

Ohlone hosts recruitment fair for Solyndra workers (Mercury News)

Ohlone hosts recruitment fair for Solyndra workers

By Wes Bowers.

Friday, March 16, 2012—Reprinted from Mercury News.

For Solyndra employees still looking for work, Ohlone College will host a recruitment event next week at its Newark campus.

Shadia Schoen, Ohlone's event spokesperson, said the college is hoping about 10 employers will show at the March 23 recruitment drive.

Because the event will be a "special recruitment," Schoen said there will not be as many companies looking for potential employees. Still, she noted firms that have expressed interest in attending include San Jose-based Xilinx, Sunnyvale's Bloom Energy, Preston Pipelines of Milpitas and Richmond-based Alion Solar.

"It's not the amount of companies; it's who's recruiting that makes these events special," Schoen said. "If it's manufacturing, green technology or something that will fit (a jobseeker's) skills, then that's what will attract them here."

This will be the second event of its kind the college has held for former Solyndra employees. Ohlone held a larger job recruitment fair for the defunct company's workers not long after the Fremont-based firm laid off 1,100 people without warning last August and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Founded in 2005, Solyndra designed and manufactured solar photovoltaic panels and mounts for the commercial rooftop market.

The company claimed it had installed its systems on more than 1,000 rooftops in more than 20 countries.

Solyndra was visited by President Barack Obama in May 2010 to tour its facilities at 47700 Kato Road. During that visit, Obama praised the
firm as an example of how green-tech companies deliver jobs.

Solyndra used $535 million in federal monies from the 2005 Energy Policy Act to construct a new fabrication facility on Kato Road just down the street from company headquarters. The facility created 3,000 construction jobs and an additional 1,000 green-tech jobs once the new building was finished.

Hundreds of additional jobs were supposed to be created for the installation of Solyndra PV systems in the United States, the firm claimed.

For the prior jobs event, Schoen said there were as many as 30 companies and more than 200 employees who showed.

Schoen said many former Solyndra employees are most likely nearing the end of their Trade Adjustment Assistance training, and this special recruitment fair could potentially help them find work right out of the training gate.

Last year, President Obama signed the Trade Adjustment Assistance Act aimed at providing benefits and services to those who become unemployed due to the impact of international trade.

"We're getting a pretty good group of employers coming to these things," Schoen said. "From our experiences in the past, employers like to come to our fairs because there are so many qualified job seekers looking for work. This will be a very good event."

Those unable to attend next Friday's event will have more opportunities in April and May, as Ohlone plans on holding larger job fairs for all who are looking for work not just former Solyndra employees, Schoen said.

The job event will take place from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Tri-Cities One Stop Career Center at Ohlone College's Newark Campus, 39399 Cherry St. Admission and parking are free.

For more information, call Schoen at 742-2328 or 742-2323 or e-mail sschoen@ohlone.edu.
