College Connection:
High School/College Joint Enrollment

One Way to Get a Head Start on Your Future

Juniors at Newark Memorial High School!

  • Are you motivated?
  • Are you a self-directed learner?
  • Are you ready to move on?
  • To have more control over your education?

The Ohlone Newark College Connection Program gives Newark Memorial Seniors the opportunity to complete their high school education on the Ohlone campus, while still enjoying and being a part of all the senior year activities including Senior Ball, Grad Night, and that most important walk across the stage, Newark Memorial’s Graduation Ceremony.

With this program, students take high school classes in the morning, and the college classes of their choice in the afternoon, giving you the opportunity to get a head start on college, whether it be continuing at a community college or earning transferable units to a four year college or university.

Sound interesting?

  • Are you in good academic standing?

Do you attend High School in Fremont?

The College Connection program, which is in it’s first year, is a collaboration between Ohlone College and Newark Memorial High School.

Fremont Unified is considering joining the program next year (2008-2009). The program is for seniors who are on schedule to graduate including having passed the California High School Exit Exam. On the Ohlone campus, they take three extended high school classes from a high school teacher: Mythology, Government/Economics, and Critical Thinking. Then they take Ohlone College courses of their own choosing.

The program was designed for three types of students:

  • the student who is a high achiever, but is not motivated,
  • the student that was a late starter academically, and
  • the student who wants a head start in a particular program, such as, nursing

The students need to be self-directed to be successful in this program. There are currently 20 girls and three boys in the program. Overall, the students are enjoying it. People outside the class have mentioned the good things they see and hear coming from the program.
