Fall 2009 Interpreter Workshops
Every semester we offer at least one class (often more) for working interpreters as well as other qualified students. Acceptance in the IPP are not required to take these classes. Some are semester long courses, others are 9-18 hour courses which meet over a weekend or two. These courses are offered for college credit and students may also earn CEUs.
INT-191A From BICS to CALP

This course is for individuals who are interested in applying for the Interpreter Preparation Program and would like a structured classroom environment to help prepare. We will explore the difference between BICS (social communication) and CALP (more advanced language competency) and work on developing CALP skills. Topics will include language flexibility and expansion, vocabulary building, expressive skills and self-evaluation activities. Instruction will be both in-class and online.
BICS: basic interpersonal communication skills; CALP: cognitive academic language proficiency.

INT-199C Introduction to Medical Interpreting

This course introduces students to interpreting in the medical setting. Topics include the wide variety of situations and consumers in the setting, environmental considerations, interpersonal considerations, medical discourse, situational ethics and resources. Register online using WebAdvisor.

This course is an introduction to interpreting in the post-secondary educational setting. The focus of this course is on the roles and responsibilities of the interpreter, language assessment, resource development, situational ethics, identifying demands and controls in the wide variety of post secondary educational settings, and team building.
