Interpreting Services - Center for Deaf Studies and Special Services

Overview

The Interpreting Services Department provides Sign Language Interpreters, or Oral Interpreters, or Real-Time Captioners for students with a verified Disability (Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Deaf- Blind or Blind-deaf) registered with the Center for Deaf Studies and Special Services and taking classes during the current semester.

Special carbon-less N.C.R. paper is available for Volunteer Peer Notetakers, recruited by the Deaf student from their class. Students may want to ask the classroom instructor for assistance with this or use the services of the Interpreter, or Real-time Captioner to make an announcement prior to start of the first class.

Interpreting services are provided for Deaf Faculty, and/or Staff for campus meetings, forums. Interpreters are also provided for qualified students in the Workability III program.

The Gary Soren Smith Center for the Fine and Performing Arts is a performing arts center on campus that is responsible for their own performances and providing Interpreters, Real-time Captioners, or Infared Assistive Listening Devices.

If services for a Deaf-blind or Blind-deaf person are required, please contact Interpreting Services to coordinate the special services needed.

How to Request an Interpreter or Real-time Captioner

For Students in Mainstream Classes

  1. Register for classes with your counselor
  2. Your counselor will inform the Interpreter Supervisor of your class schedule and interpreting needs and preferences
  3. Read the Deaf Student Handbook

For Committees, Meetings, or Extra-curricular Activities

  1. Get all the important information:

    • Who (Who is the request for?)
    • What? (What is the nature of the request?)
    • Where? (where will the event take place?)
    • Time? (Very important...Starting Time and Ending Time)

  2. Inform the Interpreting Services Supervisor, Building 5, 3rd Floor, Room 5309 (floor map).

    • All requests must be sent to the Interpreting Services Supervisor at least one week before the date of the event to acquire an interpreter.

For Outside of Ohlone, Non-Academic Requests

  1. Get all the important information:

    • Who (Who is the request for?)
    • What? (What is the nature of the request?)
    • Where? (where will the event take place?)
    • Time? (Very important...Start Time and Ending Time). Normally, if over an hour and 15 minutes, you will need to get two interpreters.
    • Contact person, include this information:
      • Name
      • Phone
      • Email
      • Pay Level
  2. If you are requesting that Ohlone College provide interpreters for outside events, we don't, but we can post it. This is not a guarantee of quality, or any committment to fill the assignment. The assignment may go unfilled, due to our own internal schedules at the college there may not be an interpreter free at the time you need. There are also area agencies listed below that you can contact and contract with for interpreting services.

    Interpreting Service Agencies:

    Don't be discouraged by the area codes they all service the entire Bay Area and each have their own pool of interpreters.

Information for Instructors

If you have never experienced working with a Deaf student or with an Interpreter or Real-time Captioner in your class before, please contact the Interpreting Services Supervisor.

If interpreters are arriving late to your class, please call the Interpreting Services Supervisor immediately to resolve this problem. The Supervisor will be happy to come to your office or classroom to explain the setup.

Interested in Interpreting at Ohlone College? (Employment Information)

If you are interested in interpreting at Ohlone College, this is what to expect:

  • If you are not R.I.D. certified, you will need to contact the supervisor of Interpreting Services (510) 659-6271 or send an email to the Interpreter Supervisor to set up an appointment to take the Video-Tape Assessment for approximately 30 minutes.
  • If you are a R.I.D. Certified Interpreter in good standing, you do not need to take the evaluation.

There is no promise to hire. The evaluation is only to see if your skills match the needs of the current student population and the level of classes offered that semester. Depending on the need that semester and on your skills, the Interpreter Supervisor will inform you if there is a match and available hours that fit your schedule. If there is not a match, you are welcome to try again another semester.

We do not provide a certification and will not release the results to any other campus or agency.

  • Paid Prep-time: At the Supervisor's discretion and only for Pre-Approved first time or highly technical classes
  • Interpreter Lounge and Patio: To hang out between classes, share signs information, and fun with other interpreters
  • Wax Machine: For wrists and elbows to help with preventative maintenance against repetitive motion injury (R.M.I.)
  • R.I.D. Skills Building Video Tapes and Printed Material: To prepare for the R.I.D. Exams or improve overall skills both expressive and receptive
  • Topic Specific Videos and Printed Materials: Available in the office
  • A refrigerator, microwave
  • Community Computer: Available to check email, Interpreter sites, etc.
  • Library of Course Specific Vocabulary: Course books from the actual courses, notes from previous notetakers with vocabulary

Problems and Concerns

For Students

If you are not satisfied with your Interpreter and you wish to have a new one placed in your class, you must:

  1. Tell the Interpreter Supervisor (in detail) why you are not satisfied with your Interpreter.
  2. The Supervisor will talk with the Interpreter and/or observe the Interpreter or Catpioner in your class to see how they can improve.
  3. If no improvements have been made after the next few class meetings and you are still not satisfied, the Supervisor will assign a new Interpreter to your class.

For Interpreters/Captioners/Notetakers:

If you are experiencing a problem with the team interpreter, or Deaf or Hard of Hearing student, or the instructor, or you feel the class is too overwhelming for you. see the Interpreter Supervisor immediately to resolve the issues.
