Making the Connection: Children... Families... Educators - A Conference for Early Childhood Educators.

The Ohlone College Early Childhood Studies Department presents the Annual Early Childhood Conference:

  • Saturday,October 4, 2008
  • 8:00am - 5:00pm
  • Keynote: To be announced
  • Held in the Ohlone Kidango Child Development Center, 43600 Mission Boulevard, Fremont, California
  • Topics include: Taking Care of the Personal and Professional; Self Working with Children with Challenging Behaviors; Child Health; Infant-Toddler, Preschool; School Age care; Family Child Care and much more
  • $20.00 Registration Fee, includes breakfast and lunch
  • Bottled water also will be available from the ECS staff

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations will be accepted until September 4, 2008 for a full refund less a $10 administrative fee. After that date no refund will be given but participant substitutions will be permitted through the registration period on Saturday, October 4, 2008.

 *  To get 1/2 unit of Ohlone College credit for the Early Childhood Studies conference:

  1. If you are a current Ohlone College student, you can register through WebAdvisor:
    • Log onto WebAdvisor.
    • Register for course number ECS-325A, use Synonym #037969, Fall 2008.

  2. All others must enroll at Ohlone College before registering for the course credit.
    • To enroll in the college, please complete the Ohlone College application (available online).
    • Students who are not U.S. citizens must verify their immigration status with the Office of Admissions and Records.  For this reason, non-citizens are asked to submit their application in person at the Office of Admissions and Records.  Students should be prepared to present a passport, permanent resident card or other documentation that will demonstrate their immigration status for the previous year.
    • Once you have enrolled at Ohlone College, you will be issued a Student ID Number.  The Office of Admissions and Records will send this to you by email within a couple of days after they have received your application.  When you have your Student ID Number, you can register for the course using WebAdvisor.  The directions are found in item 1, above.

  3. Once you have registered, you will need to pay the $10 enrollment fee for your ½ unit course credit.  You can do this online in WebAdvisor at the time you register, or in person at the Cashier’s Office on the Ohlone College Fremont campus. There will also be a $5 electronic access fee.
  4. Requires attendance at the information session from 4:30pm - 5:00pm on the conference date.

TANF-CDC Program

Are you are a CalWORKs/TANF recipient and interested in a career working with young children? Then the TANF-CDC program is for you.

Benefits of the program include:

  • Paid tuition and books
  • Child care options and referrals
  • Transportation funding
  • Career counseling, faculty advising

The TANF-CDC Program has two main purposes:

  1. to meet California’s increasing demand for additional high quality child development professionals, and
  2. to train Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients for careers in child development by achieving their Associate Teacher or Teacher Permit, providing job placement services and follow-up educational plans that will help them achieve self-sufficiency and escape the cycle of welfare dependency and poverty.

CDTC Reimbursement

The Child Development Training Consortium provides limited funds to Early Childhood Studies Students. Ohlone ECS Students apply now for Partial Tuition Reimbursement.

To qualify you must be:

  • Employed at a licensed Childcare Center/Family Childcare, a School age program, or in a kindergarten class; and
  • Currently enrolled in an ECS/GE class

Funds are processed in the following manner:

  • Students enrolled in 3 units or more (including GE and ECS units)
  • Date of submission: First Come, First Served!

After your application has been accepted then you need to complete your courses with a “C” grade or better. Payment will be made upon verification of your grades.

To apply:

  • Pick up a Participant Profile form from your ECS instructor - or download the CDTC Participant Profile form (PDF) (view with the free Adobe Reader software)
  • Correctly and completely fill out the Participant Profile
  • All forms not completely filled out will be returned
  • This may disqualify or delay your financial reimbursement
  • All Forms must be submitted by 12:00pm (noon), October 3, 2008
  • Forms must be returned to Janice Fonteno, Building 6, Office 6203

Child Development Corps AA Degree Program

Join the Corps AA Degree Program! To qualify, you must work toward an AA degree in Early Childhood Education.

The Corps AA Degree Program

The Corps AA Degree Program is designed to help early childhood educators earn an Associated Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE). The AA Degree Program will offer individual support to help you create an education plan and earn your degree. The program will provide a stipend for meeting requirements and taking classes.

The program is currently available at Chabot College, Las Positas College, Merritt College and Ohlone College. Applications for the Corps AA Degree Program will be available in the spring, but you can complete your enrollment requirements now. Even if you’ve participated in other Corps programs, you will join this program as a first-time applicant. You will receive your first stipend for meeting program eligibility and completing your enrollment requirements.

Program Eligibility

  • Work at least 15 hours per week with children birth to pre-kindergarten or an eligible AB212 school-age site in Alameda County and must have worked at the program for at least 9 months when you enroll in the Corps AA Degree Program
  • If you have at least 6 ECE units, you must have a valid Child Development Permit; if you have less than 6 ECE units, a permit is not required
  • Have not completed an AA Degree or higher in ECE
