English Department Writing Contest

The Writing Contest was initiated by Karen Rosenbaum, Professor Emeritus of Ohlone College. Professor Rosenbaum taught creative writing, literature and composition for over thirty years at Ohlone College.

The 2013 contest will be administered by Carmen Madden and Jennifer Hurley, English faculty members at Ohlone College. They will oversee the judging of the entries.

Once Upon A Time..., people writing on laptops, Happily Ever After.The Prize

The prize for the 2012 contest winner is $200. The prize will be awarded in May of 2012 and the winning entry will be published on the website of the Ohlone College English Department.

The Rules

Entrants must have been enrolled in at least three units at Ohlone College during the 2011-2012 academic year. No previously published stories will be eligible.

Submission Guidelines

  • Entries should be no longer than 2,000 words.
  • Entries can be fiction or non-fictional personal essay.
  • Only two entries per writer will be accepted.
  • Each entry should have a cover page containing the title of the story, the writer’s name, telephone number, mailing address and an email address. The pages that contain the text of the story should have only the title of the story and a page number.
  • No electronic submissions can be accepted.
  • Entries should be typed or word-processed and be double-spaced. Pages must be stapled and numbered.
  • Submissions will be accepted beginning on April 16, 2012, and must be delivered to Professor Dean’s mailbox no later than April 30, 2012. If chosen, an electronic copy will be requested.
  • Submissions must be received between the dates listed above.
  • Entries can be placed in the campus mailbox of Jeffrey Dean (located in the Mailroom in Building 1, Fremont campus).
  • Entries may also be mailed to: Jeffrey S. Dean, Associate Professor of English, Ohlone College, 43600 Mission Boulevard, Fremont, CA 94539.
