Registered Nursing Program
About the Registered Nursing Program at Ohlone College
Please carefully read about the new Annual Academic Application Cycle!
Ohlone College offers an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and the California Board of Registered Nurses (BRN). Students who graduate from this Nursing program are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN which leads to licensure as a registered nurse (RN).
With help from corporate, public and private sponsors the Ohlone Nursing Program has been able to actively address the regional nursing shortage, increasing the number of graduates by 36%. Through the support of the community, Ohlone College has been instrumental in mitigating the critical nursing shortage in the region.
The California Board of Registered Nurses (BRN) in August 2005 commended the Ohlone College Nursing program for “Innovation and Leadership”.
Did You Know…?
100% of Ohlone's Fall 2008 Nursing graduates passed their national licensing exam!
The program features:
- 60% of students from multi-cultural ethnicities
- “Human Simulator” practical instruction
- A clinical learning site
The Nursing program can be completed in two academic years. The graduates of an associate degree program in nursing are prepared to practice as staff nurses providing direct patient care in hospitals and long-term care facilities, clinics, and other agencies where nursing roles and services are structured and well developed.
All classes are held on the Newark Center campus. Clinical, hospital, and community experiences are provided at a number of sites in Alameda, Santa Clara, and other local counties. During the first year, nursing students take basic nursing and support courses to the major. The development of critical thinking, professional oral and written communications, and ethical practice form the foundation for success in future nursing courses. Beginning in the latter part of the first year and continuing through the second year, nursing courses are more specifically concerned with the care of patients ranging in age from infants to the elderly with various conditions affecting their health. With expert faculty guidance, nursing students learn to function in the clinical setting as they care for clients with a wide variety of health-illness problems.

Important Information Regarding 2010-2011 Nursing Admission Policy
In order to streamline the Registered Nursing Program admission policy, a change in the admission policy will take place effective with the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 school year. In order to be eligible to apply, prospective Nursing applicants must still meet all prerequisite requirements, attend the mandatory nursing orientation, take the ACCUPLACER Reading Assessment, see a nursing counselor and meet the 75% Chancellor’s Cut Score. All students who meet these requirements will be placed into the random selection “lottery” pool.
Those students accepted for the Fall semester will be notified by May. Those students who are accepted for the Spring semester will be notified by the end of September. No waitlist will be maintained beyond filling these two nursing classes. If a student is not selected for the Fall or Spring semester, their paperwork will be returned by the end of October. Students must reapply Those students may reapply for the next “Annual Academic Application Cycle”.
Please continue to periodically check back at this website for further information regarding the orientation dates and times for “The Annual Academic Application Cycle”.
