Biography

Rick Arellano, a professor in the Computer Applications and Occupational Technology department at Ohlone College, is a native of Lima, Peru. His five sisters and 87-year-old mother still live in Peru. Rick has lived in Newark for over 35 years and in San Francisco for 13 years.

Rick graduated from high school in Lima at age 16. With meager savings from odd jobs, Rick flew from Lima to Miami, Florida, from where he took a seven-day Greyhound bus trip to San Francisco. He worked in the fields and in restaurants.

Rick enrolled in English as a second language classes in the adult schools in San Francisco. Six months later Rick enrolled at City College of San Francisco where he majored in math; two and half years later Rick graduated with honors. Rick went on to study at UC Berkeley for two semesters. Due to financial difficulties, Rick could not finish his studies at UC Berkeley; he transferred to San Francisco State University where he obtained a B.A. in mathematics.

Right after obtaining his B.A. Rick worked in San Francisco for Horizons Unlimited, a high school dropout prevention program. The next seven years Rick worked in Oakland as a math teacher at Educacion Para Adelantar and at multilingual-multicultural programs at Oakland Tech and Westlake Junior High Schools. During this time, Rick received a fellowship to engage in doctoral studies in Education at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California; Rick abandoned the doctoral studies; he chose to study computer science instead. Rick holds a Masters of Science degree in Computer Systems.

Silicon Valley called next. The next four years Rick worked as a computer instructor and programmer at Sysorex International, Tymnet and McDonald Douglas Corporation.

Rick is a certified real estate appraiser and real estate broker. For approximately nine years Rick worked for Great Western Bank and Washington Mutual. As an independent fee appraiser he also worked for numerous other banks and financial institutions.

Rick has been employed at Ohlone College since 1999. He teaches Excel, Access, XHTML, Computer Applications in Real Estate, Real Estate Appraisal, Computer Applications in Accounting, and Computer Applications in Biology and Chemistry.

Rick’s community leadership includes:

  • City of Newark Senior Citizen Advisory Committee member (January 2011-present)
  • Newark Rotary Membership Committee Chairperson (July 2011- June 2012)

  • Newark Chamber of Commerce (2010-present)

Rick and his wife Sandra have been married for over 20 years; they have lived in Newark since 1974.

Rick and Sandi have four children who attended the Newark public schools and Ohlone College.
