An Evening with Kim Peek

Our special guest will be Kim Peek, the inspiration for Dustin Hoffman's character in the movie Rain Man.  Kim's brain is truly amazing! He possesses perfect recall for 98% of anything he reads, sees, or hears. He has memorized hundreds of books, encyclopedias, phone directories, maps, songs, etc., and can tell you the day of the week for any date within moments.  He has to be seen to be believed.

Eidetic Memory

As one of the world’s most prolific savants, Kim possesses a near perfect memory (also known as Eidetic Memory). According to his father, Kim remembers more than 98% of everything he has read.

“Rain Man” Inspiration

In 1984, script writer Barry Morrow met Kim. The result of the meeting was the 1988 movie Rain Man. The character Raymond Babbit, played by Dustin Hoffman, was inspired by Kim. Although the character in Rain Man was portrayed as having autism, Kim does not actually have that condition.

Kim’s Differences

Scientific examination has found that Kim lacks the network of fibers that connect the two hemispheres of the brain (the Corpus Callosum). Some of Kim’s differences, however, remain a mystery.

Educational Efforts

Kim and his father, Fran, work tirelessly to educate people about Savant Syndrome, memory, and acceptance of people with differences. Since they began appearing before the public, Kim’s social skills have improved dramatically. Always in their possession is the 1989 Oscar for Best Original Screenplay which screenwriter Barry Morrow gave to Kim.
