Overview of Rabbit Hole
A child’s tragic death, women throwing fists in a bar, quantum immortality, girlfight in a Safeway, and a cold marriage bed. What brings these disparate elements together with a splash of black comedy is David Lindsay-Abaire’s Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway hit, Rabbit Hole, Ohlone College’s 2009 Fall Theatre and Dance Production.
Bringing what the New York Times published as “honesty, accuracy and humor in the details…polished to a high, reflective sheen, the dialogue is blessed with Mr. Lindsay-Abaire's customary grace and wit, but never sounds less than organic.”
The 5-character play focuses on upwardly mobile Becca and Howie, trying to cope with the death of their only child, four-year-old Danny, killed in an auto accident, while Becca’s well-meaning mom and trashy sister attempt to lift their spirits, each in her own off-kilter way. The couple's lives are further complicated when the young driver who killed their son contacts them seeking his own closure as well. The play executes “an expressiveness that — like great sorrow — is beyond words.”
Cast of Characters
- Becca
- Danny’s mother, determined, focused, upwardly mobile. After a humble upbringing, she forged a successful career before marrying, having a baby and becoming a full-time mother. Used to relying on herself, she is fighting the need to cave in by organizing and removing Danny’s things and wanting to escape her surroundings.
- Howie
- Danny’s dad, a successful corporate executive, whimsical, adaptable, athletic. Comfortably fell into fatherhood immediately. Trying to hold all the pieces together, he serves as mediator between Becca and her family. His coping skill is focused on preserving every memory and physical reminder of Danny.
- Izzy
- Becca’s wild, funny, theatrical, unorthodox sister. By bringing all attention to herself (good and bad), she escapes reality. She serves as a humbling reminder to Becca of where her blue-collar roots are.
- Nat
- Becca and Izzy’s blunt, opinionated mother with a firm grasp of who she is and what she stands for. Not afraid to butt heads with anyone, Nat also tries to respect Becca’s pain, but often feels more linked with Izzy, creating Becca grief. Absolutely loves her son-in-law (possibly more than…?).
- Jason
- The pensive 16-year-old who killed Danny in a car accident 8 months ago. Bright, seemingly unemotional, but more a fatherless loner, trying to understand what happened and where it spiritually fits in the universe. Feels very estranged from the family and from his own feelings of confusion and guilt.
