Auditions for Fall 2011 Theatre Production:
Servant of Two Masters
A Classic Italian Comedy with a Modern Twist

By Carlo Goldoni. Adapted by Oded Gross and Tracy Young. Directed by Dor Atkinson.

  • Audition dates September 6 or 7, 2011, 6:00pm - 10:00pm
  • Invited callback date September 8, 2011, 6:00pm
  • Rehearsals Monday - Thursday (6:00pm - 10:00pm) starting September 12, 2011
  • Performance dates November 3-5, 10-12, and 17-19, 2011
  • Special 10:00am matinees on November 8, 9, 15, 16, 2011

14 roles available (8 male, 4 female, 2 either):

  • Truffaldino - Wise-cracking high-energy servant, hungry all the time
  • Smeraldina - Clarice’s sassy maid, more clever than anyone else in the room
  • Beatrice - Feminist, masquerading as her brother Federigo, in love with Florindo
  • Florindo - Very handsome, conceited leading man type, in love with Beatrice
  • Sylvio - The young, hot-headed lover of Clarice
  • Clarice - Sylvio’s cute but dim-witted intended, previously betrothed to Federigo Rasponi
  • Dottore - Sylvio’s overbearing father, likes to flaunt his education
  • Pantalone - Clarice’s old and stingy father
  • Brighella - Sweet old lady cook (with secret murderous intentions)
  • Bob - Large, easily frightened actor playing 1/3 of the servant Giovanni
  • Jim - Short, tough-talking actor playing 1/3 of the servant Giovanni
  • Steve - Tall, nerdish brainiac actor playing 1/3 of the servant Giovanni
  • DJ / Sound Op - A guy or girl who handles all sound cues, onstage, all the time
  • Props Person - A guy or girl who whisks on and off stage, handing props to actor on skates/bike, etc.

Open Auditions

You may email datkinson@ohlone.edu for an audition time in advance or sign-up for an available slot when you arrive. Choose one date:

  • September 6, 6:00pm - 10:00pm, NUMMI Studio Theatre, Smith Center at Ohlone College
    or
  • September 7, 6:00pm - 10:00pm, NUMMI Studio Theatre, Smith Center at Ohlone College

Please bring your headshot, theatre resume, and detailed work/class schedule.

Warm-up

Please come dressed comfortably in sweats, etc, to move freely. Running-type shoes encouraged. It is strongly recommended that you take the time to stretch and warm-up your bodies and voices prior to presenting your solo piece. The director will be looking for actors who are connected in their movement and who have the potential for dynamic physicality.

Monologues

Please prepare a 1-2 minute solo piece, utilizing a classical or contemporary monologue from a commedia play or other type of play. This monologue must be memorized.

Please include the following in your solo piece:

  • conflict; something your character is trying to overcome
  • bold physical choices for character physicality
  • the incorporation of an object or prop, leading to comic physical action
  • an acrobatic act or stunt you can perform successfully and safely. (Please do not perform any trick or stunt you are unfamiliar with or may cause injury.)

Please be sure to time your performance piece and do not go over two (2) minutes.

You are encouraged this Summer to help each other out by watching each other’s solo audition pieces and offering feedback.

Invited Callbacks

  • September 8, 6:00pm, NUMMI Studio Theatre, Smith Center at Ohlone College

Pairs and groups will be asked to read scenes from the play, and switch roles. Please prepare this Summer by familiarizing yourself with the script, the characters, and their relationships.

Callbacks may also include a short interview with the director.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals will take place Monday through Thursday evenings beginning Monday, September 12 from 6:00pm to 10:00pm in the NUMMI Studio Theatre, Smith Center at Ohlone College.
