K-12 Special Admission (High School and Pre-High School Students) - Admissions and Records

K-12 Students

It is advisable to begin the application process at least eight (8) weeks prior to the start of the term.

The term “special student” applies to all students who are currently in grades Kindergarten through 12 (K-12) and wish to enroll in Ohlone courses. In accordance with Title 5 of the California Education Code, K-12 students may enroll as special or part-time students while they maintain their regular school attendance. Units earned may be used for high school credit and college credit. There is a seven-unit maximum for K-12 students during Spring and Fall semesters and Summer term. Starting Summer 2008, K-12 students may not enroll in PE or ATHL classes.

Enrolling in classes at Ohlone College is the first step in a college career. K-12 students will be expected to participate at a college level. Class materials and content may include adult language and subject material. Grades received at Ohlone College become part of a permanent college record and college transcript. Students should make class selections accordingly with parent, school counselor, and principal guidance.

K-12 students are required per Title 5 of the California Education Code to submit a new application packet every term. Because multiple signatures are required for K-12 applications, it is advisable to begin this process at least eight (8) weeks prior to the start of any term. Applications for Summer 2008 should be submitted by Monday, May 12 and applications for Fall 2008 should be submitted by Monday, July 28 to ensure the earliest possible registration times.

K-9 and 10-12 permission packets are available below, at the Fremont and Newark campus, and at each district high school. Forms, directions, and a parent’s checklist for K-9 and 10-12 students are all available below.

K-12 students are exempt from paying the California Community College Enrollment Fee ($20 per unit) but are subject to a $16 Health Services Fee, $5 Online Registration Access Fee, and $5 optional Student Activities Fee, unless all classes are off campus.

K-9 Students

Admission for students who have not yet completed the 9th grade requires slightly different processing than 10th-12th grade students. K-9 students should refer to the K-12 Enrollment Steps and carefully follow the directions in the application packet to avoid delays in processing.

High School Outreach

Ohlone College has a special program for interested high school students. High school seniors who satisfy the "Senior Checklist" by the appropriate dates will be eligible to begin signing up on the first day new students are able to begin registering. Classes fill up quickly, so you will have an advantage if you finish these steps and register for classes as early as possible. More information is available on the Counseling website.

“The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that affords parents the right to have access to their children’s education records, the right to seek to have the records amended, and the right to have some control over the disclosure of personally identifiable information from the education records. When a student turns 18 years old or enters a post secondary institution at any age, the rights under FERPA transfer from the parents to the student.” Students who are enrolled at Ohlone College are covered by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). According to this legislation, college personnel cannot release a student’s records or speak with parents and/or guardians about any student’s academic records without the student completing the “Release of Information” form. The exception to this is if the student is claimed as a dependent by either parent for tax purposes. Ohlone College reserves the right to require documents verifying student’s status as a dependent
