2013 Coach Biography: Julian Russell, Head Coach - Ohlone Renegades Men's Baseball
Coach Russell is entering his 3rd season as Head Baseball Coach at Ohlone College after finishing 2012 with a 28-12 overall record and 20-4 in the Coast Conference. The Renegades clinched their 2nd consecutive Coast Conference and Regional Championships, and Russell was named the Coast Conference Coach of the Year for the second time. In 2011 Russell was named Northern California Co-Coach of the Year and ABCA Regional Coach of the Year after finishing the season as State Champion Runner-Up.
In 2010, Russell was an assistant coach for the 2010 State Champions led by his former teammate and Head Coach Jordon Twohig. Russell coached the infield and third base, and helped guide the Renegades to the third highest fielding percentage in the state (.972) with three infielders receiving Coast Conference Gold Glove award honors. Prior to Ohlone, Russell was an assistant coach at University of Hawaii for two seasons and also played shortstop for the Rainbows for two seasons. Russell began his college career at Feather River College.
Russell strongly emphasizes the importance of academics with over 30 sophomores receiving scholarships after earning their Associates Degree from Ohlone and three players have been honored with Academic All-State selections. Twenty three players have been selected to the All-Coast Conference team under Russell including, Ryan Tella, who was named Coast Conference Player of the Year, Northern California Player of the Year and ABCA Player of the Year. Three players were taken in the 2011 MLB draft including George Asmus (Chicago Cubs, 24th Rd), Ryan Tella (Minnesota Twins, 34th Rd) and Joel Thys (Florida Marlins, 47th Rd).
Russell received his Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of Hawaii and earned a Master's Degree in Sport Management from the University of San Francisco.
Russell resides in Livermore, CA with his wife Paula, daughter Logan (4) and son Tighe (1).
