June 12, 2008, Fremont Bulletin - Joe Gardner is living the dream that many young baseball players have when they pick up a bat and glove. Gardner, a Fremont resident and ace pitcher at both Milpitas High School and Ohlone Community College, is heading for Kenai, Alaska, to play in a summer collegiate league before starting his career at the University of California at Santa Barbara thanks to a full-scholarship. May 21, 2008, Tri-City Voice - Moving on with Baseball Scholarships or Academic Scholarships. Matt Langseth 2B - Cornell University (New York) - Langseth was a two-time First Team ALL-Conference player for Ohlone. Langseth led the 2008 Renegades in many offensive categories. He had a team high batting average of .370, led in stolen bases with 25, triples with 5, walks with 25, hits with 61, and runs scored with 56. May 1, 2008, Fremont, CA - In the final regular season game of the Coast Conference –South, Ohlone College (21-21/13-12) upset the #1 undefeated West Valley College (33-7/ 23-1) by the score of 7-6. Ohlone Starter David Luna (4-1) went 7 innings strong for the win striking out 3 West Valley batters. West Valley’s David Meals (7-1) earns the loss. April 22, 2008, Fremont, CA - The Ohlone College baseball team suffered a blow on Tuesday as they fell to Hartnell College in the top of the 12th inning by the score of 6-5. Ohlone tied up the game in the bottom of the ninth inning but three extra innings were not enough as Hartnell pushed across the game winner in the 12th. Taft College came into today’s game off the heels of huge win over #2 ranked Fresno City College 2-1, but was out hit today 16-7 by the Renegades in the contest. Renegades starting pitcher Joe Gardner pitched 4 solid innings of scoreless baseball, only giving up 1 hit. March 12, 2008, Tri-City Voice - Ohlone rebounded with a 9-3 non-conference win over Mission of Santa Clara last Thursday, March 6. Ham's three hits led the Renegades while pitcher Shane Murchison, with a record of five wins and zero losses (5-0), continued his winning ways by allowing only three hits in six innings against Mission. The win snapped a two game losing streak for the Renegades and improved Ohlone's overall record to eight wins and ten losses (8-10). The Renegades (9-10) defeated San Jose City College b y the score of 15-12 on a very windy day. Ohlone pitchers combined for 9 strikeouts on the afternoon. Joe Gardner (2-3) started the game and left with the lead, but San Jose city would retake the lead and reliever David Luna (1-0) would earn the win for Ohlone. Krisman threw 3 strong innings striking out 4 Chabot batters, but was strapped with the loss when he left the game in the third inning down 2-1. February 25, 2008, Fremont, CA - Ohlone College lost a close game Wednesday, despite a great outing by starter Shane Murchison (3-1) on a warm afternoon in Fremont. Relief pitcher Casey Henneman earned the win for Diablo Valley, as Ohlone hitters got to starter Taylor Stanton, going up 4-1 in the 5th inning. March 5, 2008, Tri-City Voice - Ohlone College Renegades' baseball team (6-8) defeated the Canada Colts of Redwood City (10-2) on Monday, Feb. 25, by the score of 12-4. Ohlone pitcher Joe Gardner (2-2) struck out six batters in six innings while only allowing one earned run on his way to winning his second decision of the season. February 20, 2008, Tri-City Voice - Ohlone College's baseball program is under the leadership of first year head coach Tom Kunis. … Kunis also brings the Stanford way of developing student athletes in that to become a good college athlete, you have to first become a good college student. Murchison pitches 7 innings for the win

February 16, 2008 - Game 1 - Santa Maria, CA - Game 1 of the double header against Oxnard College was played at Elks Field in Santa Maria, home to the Santa Maria Indians of the California Collegiate Summer League. Ohlone received another quality start from Sophomore Shane Murchison (3-0) who struck out 4 batters while only walking 1 in 7 innings of work. “Shane pitched well today, he kept the ball down, and really competed”, said Head Coach Tom Kunis.

The Renegades Offense was lead by David Luna who was 2-4 with a triple, a single and 2 RBI. Freshman Aaron Plimmer added a 2 RBI single in the third inning that put the Renegades on the board. Shortstop Rich McDowell went 2-4 with a single, and a double.

Second baseman Matt Langseth added a double, a walk and a stolen base to the Ohlone win. “I liked the way we are swinging the bat right now”, explained Kunis. “Our guys are taking a great approach and finding a way to score runs.” Freshman Cory Krisman came in relief for Murchison and gave a quality performance striking out 1 batter, while walking none in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Ohlone gives up 8th inning lead to lose 11-8

Game 2 - San Luis Obispo, CA—The Ohlone College baseball team had a busy Saturday. Ohlone played Oxnard College in Game 1 of a double header in Santa Maria, CA. After winning the Game 8-2, Ohlone packed up the bus and drove 45 minutes north to San Luis Obispo to take on Cuesta College in Game 2 of the double header. Ohlone Started Sophomore Pitcher Joe Gardner and he did not disappoint. Gardner kept Cuesta’s tough hitting offense to 7 hits in 6 innings of work. Gardner struck out 7 Cuesta batters while only walking 1. Gardner left the game in the 6th with a 6-2 lead. “I really felt like Joe pitched well, and has really turned a corner for us”, commented Head Coach Tom Kunis. “He threw 66 strikes in the outing and really challenged hitters with all of his pitches.”

Ohlone’s offense was ready play in game 2. The game was in a 1-1 tie in the top of the 4th inning when Michael Vandenbusch hit a single to right field scoring Justin Lunday. Matt Langseth followed that up with a single of his own scoring Zack Townsend. Then with 2 out and a 3-2 count, David Luna hit an opposite field 2 run, HR to put Ohlone up 5-1. Ohlone would tack on another run in their half of the 5th inning as Rich McDowell led the inning off with a triple off the right center fence, and was driven in by a sac-fly by Sophomore Justin Lunday. Lunday was 2-3 on the afternoon with an RBI. Cuesta battled back and cut the lead 6-2 in their half of the 6th. Ohlone was unable to score in the 7th, but Cuesta put up 4 runs on 3 Ohlone Errors and tied the game 6-6. Ohlone answered back in the 8th scoring 2 runs off a David Luna double to retake the lead 8-6. Luna was 2-4 on the day with a HR, 2B, and 4 RBI. That was all the runs Ohlone would score as Cuesta got to the Ohlone bullpen combined with 2 more defensive errors to drop the lead for good. “It is never easy losing a game like that,” said Kunis. “We received a quality start, but made too many mistakes in the field, and in relief to overcome.” Ohlone looks to get back on the winning side of things as they host Diablo Valley College February 21, Game time set for 2pm.

February 15, 2008, Santa Maria, CA—After a big win on Tuesday over San Mateo College 2-1, Ohlone Baseball lost to Hancock College in Santa Maria 7-3 in the first game of the Cuesta-Hancock Invitational Tournament. Ohlone had many opportunities to score but did not get the timely hitting they needed to secure a win. Matt Langseth went 2-3 with a pair of doubles, and a walk. Ohlone received a spark from the bench as freshman Kevin Sherer from Livermore High school came into the game in right field and had a 1B, and a walk in his only at bats. Ohlone starter Nick Colvin struggled to find his rhythm early in the game, but was relieved by freshman Ian Hoff, who gave a strong performance out of the bull pen. Hoff pitched 4 inning, going right after Oxnard innings giving up 0 earned runs in the outing giving the Renegades a chance to win the game. Ohlone hopes to erase the loss as they continue in the Hancock-Cuesta Tournament with a double header on Saturday against Oxnard College, and Cuesta College.

February 12, 2008, Fremont, CA - The Ohlone Renegades (4-5, overall) took to the field Tuesday afternoon hosting the San Mateo Bulldogs. Ohlone Baseball had 6 pitchers toe the rubber on the afternoon to get a 2-1 win over #6 ranked San Mateo. Ohlone started Nick Colvin on the mound who recorded 2 quick outs in the 1st then proceeded to give up a 1b and to walks to load the bases for San Mateo. February 9, 2008, Fremont, CA - The weather could not have been better as the Ohlone Renegades took to the field Saturday afternoon. Ohlone capped off their tournament weekend with a win against Laney College 14-3. The win left the Renegades 2-3 on the weekend, and (3-5 overall). Ohlone starting pitcher Joe Gardner had his best outing to date, pitching 7innings giving up only 1 run. Gardner had 8 strikeouts in the performance with 0 walks. February 7, 2008, Fremont, CA - After a great week of weather, and the tireless work of the Ohlone Baseball field crew, the ball field was ready for the 2008 Home opener against DeAnza College. This was also the opening game of the annual Ohlone-Mission Spring Tournament. Ohlone wasted no time jumping up on DeAnza in the 1st inning 4-0, thanks in part to RBI singles by David Luna, and Braxton Miller off DeAnza starting pitcher Jamie Wagner. Coming off the momentum of an 8-4 win over Porterville College, Ohlone got things going in the 1st inning when Michael Vandenbusch got a 1B and then stole second base for the Renegades. Guthrie / Kunis Pitching Talk a Big Success!

November 13, 2007, FREMONT, CA - Major League pitcher, and former Stanford Cardinal Jeremy Guthrie came to speak with Head baseball Coach Tom Kunis this past Tuesday night. The event was a pitching forum and speaking event on Guthrie's time as a player with Coach Kunis, as well as his time currently as a major league baseball player.
