The Ohlone College Baseball team is No. 1 ranked in Northern California for the first time this late in the season, and the men on the mound have shown the way.
The Renegades, who were 21-5 overall and 8-2 in the Coast Conference Pacific Division heading into Saturday's game against City College of San Francisco, boast five solid sophomore pitchers and clutch hitters galore.
Last year Ohlone finished a modest 21-22 overall.
"They (the sophomore pitchers) really been have been the difference for us this year," Ohlone head coach Jordon Twohig said. "The guys have gone out there game after game and given us quality starts."
Ohlone's sophomore catcher Braxton Miller (Tracy, Nevada-Reno) is hitting .375, and sophomore pitcher Ian Hoff (Hatboro, Pa., USF), a 6-foot-2 right-hander with a 5-1 record, are key producers, captains and team leaders.
Sophomore outfielder Jeff Johnson (California HS) has a .417 average with 10 home runs, eight doubles, four triples and 27 RBI in 24 games. His slugging percentage is a stunning .964.
The Renegades' biggest wins to date were against No. 2 ranked Sacramento City, when Hoff tossed a one-hitter, and rival Chabot College, 8-5. Twohig formerly was an assistant coach at Saint Mary's College and Feather River JC, and also scouted for the Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates.
This week the Renegades beat Hartnell 14-4 and Monterey Peninsula 7-5 in the Pacific Division. Also, second-place Canada-Redwood City (18-7, 7-3) beat Hartnell 9-7.
Ohlone starter David Luna (Piedmont Hills, San Jose) won his fourth game on the season against Hartnell. Against Monterey Hoff relieved freshman starter Sean Martin (Newark) and picked up win No. 5, allowing no hits over 21/3 innings, striking out four. Sophomore Cory Krisman (Livermore) worked the ninth for the save.
