With the junior college baseball season winding down, teams are jockeying for playoff position: Ohlone (30-6 going into last week's play) has all but stamped their ticket into tournament play, atop the Coast Conference Pacific Division; meanwhile, Chabot has started to pick up their play, sitting in second place in the Coast Conference Golden Gate Division.

Both teams took to the field three times last week: two road games, sandwiched by a home game for each.

After notching win number 30 on the year, Ohlone struggled to get to 31, by losing a close one to Consumnes River in game two of a double header. They had a week to think about that loss, until they traveled to San Mateo on Tuesday, April 14.

San Mateo, who sits atop the Golden Gate Division, just ahead of Chabot, was able to hold the Ohlone bats in check. On the offensive side, they put just enough runs across to prevent the Renegades from win number 31 for another game, winning 4-3.

Chabot, looking for help but not getting it from Ohlone, traveled to Hartnell on Tuesday, April 14. Instead, the Gladiators looked to keep pace with San Mateo in the standings. They did: convincingly. Chabot, whose offense has been on a tear of late, got out to another early lead, and cruised to victory, 15-5.

Both Ohlone and Chabot were on the road again on Thursday, April 16: the Renegades looking to end their two-game slide against a weak Cabrillo team; the Gladiators hoping to keep the hot bats rolling against Ca–ada.

In another high-scoring affair for Chabot, the only difference in this contest with Ca–ada was that their pitching didn't hold down the opposition. When the Gladiators were scoring eight runs - a high total, but low for the past couple week's outputs - Ca–ada was tallying nine, en route to their victory, 9-8.

Ohlone went into Cabrillo and put their two-game losing skid behind them with a dominating performance. Sean Martin picked up the win for the Renegades, as he improved to 8-0 on the season.

Ohlone's Johnsons - Jeff and Zack - led the offense, going a combined 7-10, with four RBIs. JoJo Hernandez also contributed with two RBIs for the Renegades; and Aaron Plimmer hit his first homer of the year in the 10-2 victory.

After two road games to start the week, where both teams went 1-1, the two sides each returned home to conclude the week: Chabot versus San Jose City; Ohlone versus Ca–ada.

Home field paid dividends for both sides, as each won in strong outings.

Chabot, behind another strong offensive output, was able to down San Jose City, 9-5. Meanwhile, Ohlone, led by a complete-game win by Luna, and a home run by Zack Johnson, was able to win to close out their week, 7-1.

Ohlone (@ Monterey Peninsula) and Chabot (@ San Mateo) are back on the road Thursday afternoon, at 2. Ohlone goes to Gavilan for a Saturday tilt at noon; Chabot returns home to battle West Valley on Saturday, also at noon.

Each side had home games on Tuesday, April 21 - Chabot versus De Anza; Ohlone versus Hartnell. Results were not available for press. Log onto www.tricityvoice.com/sports for up-to-date scores on these games, and more.
