After winning the Coast Conference outright for the first time since 1991, ranked number four in the nation, number two in the state and number one in the Northern California Regional Tournament, the Ohlone Renegades baseball team did not disappoint in their first playoff game in front of their home crowd, as they defeated the Chabot Gladiators handily, 9-2.
David Luna spun a gem on the mound for the Renegades, going eight strong innings, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out eight in earning his ninth win of the season.
On the offensive side of the ball, Zack Johnson gave the Renegades all they would need in the third inning, as he popped his seventh home run of the year, a two-run shot to break the 2-2 tie. In total, Johnson had six RBIs on the game, single-handedly leading the Renegades to victory.
Steven Ramos, Cody Foster and Jeff Johnson -- the one, two and four hitters in the lineup, respectively -- tallied one RBI a piece to round out the scoring for Ohlone.
Gladiators starting pitcher, southpaw David Singleton, allowed five runs in five innings, getting the loss, and dropping his record to 8-3 on the season.
Ohlone leads the best of three series, 1-0, and will host Chabot again at the Ohlone Campus on Saturday morning at 11. Should Chabot prevail in Game 2, a winner-take-all contest will be held at Ohlone at 3 p.m.
Chabot advanced to the opening round of the Nor Cal Regional with a play-in game, extra-inning, 6-5 victory on Tuesday at home against Shasta, courtesy of a Conor Coleman game-winning double.
