The #1 ranked Ohlone Renegades (36-9, 1-0) defeated the visiting #16 Chabot Gladiators, in the first day of the Fremont Regional playoff, by a score of 9-2. Sophomore David Luna pitched a very solid 8 innings, allowing only 3 hits, 2 runs, and struck out 8 Chabot batters to earn his 9th win of the year. Sophomore Ian Hoff pitched a perfect 9th inning to close out the ball game.
As they have done all year, the Renegades struck early. Ohlone scored 2 runs in the bottom half of the 1st inning to take a quick 2-0 lead. Freshman Stephen Ramos led off the inning with a line drive to right field for a base knock. Cody Foster then sacrificed Ramos to 2nd and was safe at first when Chabot tried to force Ramos out at 2nd base. After a passed ball, Ohlone had runners at 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs and Zach Johnson at the plate. Zach drove a high, deep fly ball to center field that allowed Ramos to scoot home easily for Ohlone first run. Zach’s brother, Jeff Johnson would then single home Foster to give Ohlone their 2 runs.
After Chabot evened the score at 2 a piece, the Renegades offense shifted into a different gear. Zach Johnson homered in the bottom of the 3rd to give Ohlone a 4-2 lead. Stephen Ramos singled in Michael Ussery with 2 outs in the 4th to boost the lead to 5-2. Zach Johnson was back at it in the 6th, singling in Ussery and Ramos to make the score 7-2. The Renegades finished up the scoring on the day with 2 runs in the 7th. Foster singled in Ussery and then Zach Johnson followed with a single to score Aaron Chavez.
On the day, the offense pounded out 13 hits and 9 runs. The man of the day was Zach Johnson. Zach went 3 for 4, with 2 singles, a home run, and 6 RBI’s. Ramos, Foster, Jeff Johnson, and Braxton Miller all added multiple hit days at the plate as well. Ohlone also took advantage of 7 walks given up by Chabot pitchers.
Saturday’s Game proved to be an all out 12-inning battle in Fremont. The Renegades of Ohlone College won the regional title over Chabot College by the score of 11-10. It was a back and forth game all day. Ian Hoff pitched 7.2 innings of relief to earn his 9th win of the season. Ian threw 53 strikes and only 8 balls on the afternoon. Designated Hitter Jeff Johnson hit 2 home runs on the day, one in the top of the 9th with a runner on and Ohlone down 10-8. Johnson’s blast tied the game.
In the bottom of the 11th inning Chabot College would load the bases with 0 outs, but Ian Hoff and the rest of the Renegade defense battled out as they had done all game. Hoff got the next batter to hit a come-backer ground ball that started the rare 1-2-3 double play. He then got then next batter to ground out to shortstop to end the threat and give Ohlone yet another chance to win the game.
In the top of the 12th and 2 outs Braxton Miller stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd on the throw. Then sophomore Ryan Harmon had a 9 pitch battle and with a 3-2 count, he hit a line drive in the 6-hole. Chabot’s shortstop Nick Bartolone made the play but his throw was up the line. Harmon saw the 1st baseman come off the bag for the throw and slid head first missing the tag, and was called safe. Miller scored on the play, and Ian Hoff and the Ohlone defense retired the Gladiators in order in the bottom of the 12th to bring home the victory.
