If there were any concerns about the Ohlone College baseball team's pitching rotation, the Thursday, Feb. 11, 8-3 win against Big 8 Conference opponent Santa Rosa should prove that the Renegade's rotation is just fine.

Freshman Mark Mercer (1-0) won his collegiate debut throwing a solid six innings, allowing just five hits while striking out four and walking two batters.

Santa Rosa's starter Joe Wittig struggled though two and a third innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on three hits as Santa Rosa's two errors in the first three innings did not help his cause.

Mercer's shutout through six continues the shutout streak by the Renegade starters. Ohlone's starting pitchers have not allowed a run in the team's first two games. Sophomore lefty Roberto Padilla pitched five and a third shutout innings in the Renegades' 14-2 season-opening win at Diablo Valley on Monday, Feb. 8.

The Renegades took charge from the very start, taking an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first off Cody Foster's RBI, scoring leadoff hitter Steven Ramos off an error by Santa Rosa catcher Kevin Cramer to open the scoring.

Foster would score on the next batter as Zach Johnson's RBI single to right scored him from third, putting Ohlone up 2-0. The Renegades went up 3-0 off an RBI fielder's choice by catcher Cody De Mara.

Ohlone would strike again for three runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single by shortstop Michael Ussery, followed by single-run innings in the sixth and eighth innings.

Santa Rosa would get on the board in the eighth, scoring twice off pitchers Jon Sa and Jordan Camacho, with an RBI single by Cramer and a bases-loaded, RBI walk by Nick Delorenzo, and would score a run in the bottom of the ninth inning off Camacho.

Ohlone ended its week on Saturday, Feb. 13, with a 11-5 loss on the road to Cosumnes River College.
