Left-hander Roberto Padilla tossed a two-hit shutout as host Ohlone College cruised to a 9-0 win over Modesto in the first game of the California Community College Athletic Association regional baseball playoffs in Fremont on Friday.
The series continues today with Game 2 at 11 a.m. A third game, if necessary, would start at 2 p.m.
Padilla retired the first seven batters before giving up a single to Jacob Rodriguez in the third inning. Dillon Usiak had the Pirates' only other hit, a single in the fifth.
Padilla's biggest challenge came in the eighth when, with one out, he hit a batter and walked the next one on four pitches. He settled down and retired the next two hitters. In all, Padilla struck out five and gave up just that one walk in shutting down 14th-seeded Modesto (18-18).
Run support wasn't an issue for the No. 3 Renegades (29-8). Michael Ussery highlighted a three-run second with a double that scored Tanner Laran and Kyle Holmstrom. Ryan Walterhouse singled in Ussery. Jeff Johnson had a three-run homer in the fifth, and the Renegades added three more in the sixth on Cody Foster's RBI double and Zach Johnson's two-run single.
