2010 CCCAA Baseball State Championship: Game 4 Recap

Ohlone College Renegades (36-10) def. Rio Hondo College Roadrunners (32-11), 11-2

Fresno—In their opening wins of the California Community College Athletic Association, Ohlone College and Rio Hondo College combined to produce 31 runs on 39 hits. The two met up in the championship semi-finals at John Euless Ballpark at Fresno City College on Saturday and it was Ohlone (36-10) that came out on top in an 11-2 win, sending the Renegades to the championship round on Sunday. The Renegades peppered Rio Hondo pitcher for 17 hits after lighting up El Camino College with 19 hits on Friday.

With the loss, the Roadrunners (32-11) will now face San Mateo College in the late game with the winner advancing to face Ohlone in the finals on Sunday. However, the winner of the late game must defeat the Renegades twice to win the title.

The Renegades got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the second inning off Roadrunners starter Victor Soto (10-5). Three singles led to the first run, with Michael Vessey driving in Jeff Johnson before a bases loaded walk to Ryan Walterhouse and a Cody Foster fielder’s choice bringing home the next two for an early 3-0 advantage.

Ohlone pitcher Justin Kuks (5-2) matched the performance of teammate Roberto Padilla and three relief pitchers from the opening game, as he went seven innings and surrendered just one run on five hits, while striking out seven and also allowed six walks. George Asmus came on in relief and…

Rio Hondo responded with a run in the top of the third, as Thomas Jenson doubled down the left-field line with two outs to drive in George Mendoza. Ohlone didn’t waste any time extending their lead to 5-1 on back-to-back solo home runs by Zach Johnson and Jeff Johnson to start the bottom of the stanza. The Renegades added an insurance run in the sixth on a bad-hop infield single by Steven Ramos with two outs that scored Kyle Holstrom. They concluded the scoring with two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth inning.

Down 8-1, Rio Hondo put a scare in Ohlone in the eighth inning after scoring a run on a bases loaded walk by Rudy Casillas, but Asmus got George Mendoza to fly out, ending the threat.

Ramos, Jeff Johnson and Michael Ussery all collected three hits for Ohlone and drove in a combined five runs, while three other players had two hits. The trio of Jenson (2-for-4, 2 2Bs and RBI), Adam Hurley and Mendoza each had two hits for the Roadrunners.

Game Notes: The game experienced a 30-minute stoppage after Rio Hondo CF Mike Vinnitsky was injured when he crashed into the center field wall on a home run by Ohlone’s Jeff Johnson in the seventh inning... The extent of the injuries were not released, but Vinnitsky was taken away in an ambulance and transported to Fresno Community Hospital…. Through the first four games, the winning team has scored in double-digits…
