In the past week, high school seniors and junior college athletes have confirmed their college plans by signing their letters of intent for the university teams they will join next fall. Six Tracy athletes confirmed this week that they have committed to colleges for the 2011-12 year.

Matt Fontaine

After a championship baseball season with the Renegades of Ohlone College, former West High pitcher Matt Fontaine, Class of 2009, has committed to Fresno State.

Fontaine will join a Bulldog baseball team that will have to live up to its 2010 Western Athletic Conference regular-season championship.

Ohlone went 20-5 in the Coast Pacific Conference in 2010 and then worked its way up to the California Community Colleges Athletic Association championship in May. Fontaine was part of the core of the Renegades’ pitching staff, which included fellow West grads Justin Kuks and Ryan Devencenzi.

He met the Bulldogs’ head coach after a regular-season game, when the Fresno coaching staff was out to take a look at Ohlone players.

“It was one of my better starts,” he said, “I was throwing all of my pitches for strikes. It was a day when everything went right for me.”

Fontaine’s résumé includes three appearances on the Tri-City Athletic League all-league list, twice on the first team. That includes the 2009 season, when he had an 8-2 record and a 1.14 earned-run average and 74 strikeouts to earn the Wolf Pack’s team most-valuable player award.

Fontaine expects the transition to Division I baseball to go smoothly and figures he will be able to work well with the Bulldog coaches.

“The coaches are similar to my coaches at Ohlone. It just seemed like a good fit,” he said, adding that he also expects the competitive level to increase substantially. “When you get to the next level, you want to get better, so you do everything you can to get better.”
