Bakersfield—One big inning on offense and nine impressive innings by starting pitcher Matt Fontaine was the winning equation for Ohlone College’s 8-0 win over Santa Ana College in Game 2 of the 2011 California Community College Athletic Association Baseball State Championships, held at Bakersfield College’s Gerry Collis Field.
Fontaine (8-3) did a masterful job of shutting down a Dons’ offense that produced 57 hits over their three wins at last week’s Super Regional. The sophomore righty went the distance, allowing no runs on just six hits, walking none, while striking out 11. He allowed more than one hit in just one inning (first) and retired the side in three different frames.
The offense did its job against the Dons as well, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and blew the game wide open with a six-run fifth inning. In the opening frame, Ryan Tella walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Owen and scored on a two-out double by Christian Weeber to give Ohlone a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, two-run singles by Owen and Matt Chaidez highlighted the 11-batter, six-run frame, knocking out starting pitcher Ben Burke (7-5). Burke finished the evening allowing seven runs (three earned) on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Ohlone capped off its offense for the night in the eighth when Joel Thys doubled, advanced to third on a SAC error and scored on a RBI-grounder to Chaidez to put the Renegades up 8-0.
In the ninth, Fontaine slammed the door to record the win. After allowing a one-out single, he retired the next batter on a pop out and ended the game by striking out Austin O’Neal for the third time in the contest and his 11th punch out of the night.
Thys finished the evening 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI to lead the defending state champion Renegades.
Gary Apelian was the lone SAC player with more than one hit, going 2-for-4.
With the win, Ohlone (27-17) will advance to tomorrow’s championship semifinal against San Joaquin Delta, beginning at 2 p.m. The loss will send the Dons into the 10 a.m. elimination game against Glendale College.
