Bakersfield—Matt Owen singled home Ryan Tella with the game-winning run, as Ohlone College moved into the championship finals with their 3-2 win over San Joaquin Delta College on Saturday in the California Community College Athletic Association Baseball State Championships at Gerry Collis Field in Bakersfield. The Mustangs (32-12) will now face Glendale College in an elimination game at 5:45 p.m., with the winner facing the defending state champion Renegades (28-17) on Sunday. The winner of the Delta/Glendale game will have to defeat Ohlone twice on Sunday.
After spotting San Joaquin Delta a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a Josh Grijalva RBI single and run-scoring sacrifice fly by Stephen Patterson, Ohlone pitcher George Asmus (6-2) limited the Mustangs to just three hits the rest of the way. Asmus, who tossed his second complete game of the season, struck out eight batters, including Andy Scott for the final out of the game.
The Renegades scored their first run of the game in the sixth inning after Kiaona Crowell singled to lead off the stanza, stole second base and came home on a single by Richard Bermudez.
Christian Richards doubled with one out in the seventh inning off Delta starting pitcher Trevor Miller (9-1) and advanced to third on an infield single by Matt Chaidez. Miller was replaced by Aaron Gilles, who induced a ground ball to first baseman Randy Villa, who got the lead runner, but Tella was safe on a close play at first base. On the play, Richards scored to tie the game. After Tella stole second base, Owen followed with a single to left field that chased Tella home with the eventual game-winning run.
Ohlone is looking to become the first repeat state champion since Riverside College won three in a row from 2000-02.
