Bakersfield—The San Joaquin Delta College Mustangs earned some extended time in Bakersfield after topping the Ohlone College Renegades, 5-3, in the first championship matchup of the 2011 California Community College Baseball State Championships, held at BC’s Gerry Collis Field.

The Mustangs (34-12) grabbed hold of the opening game in the bottom of the second inning. Spencer Franceshettie ripped a two-run single with the bases loaded, putting Delta up 2-0. Erik Kozel followed with an RBI-single and two batters later Langston Calhoun made it 5-0 with a two-run double to right.

Ohlone (28-18) responded with a run in the top of the third to make it 5-1. Christian Richards led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI-single to center off the bat of freshman Ryan Tella.

From there, both pitchers settled down throughout the middle portion of the game. After allowing five runs, Ohlone right-hander Alika Pruett (4-4) retired 16 of the next 19 batters he faced, keeping the Renegades in the game.

Likewise for Delta lefty and eventual winning pitcher Aaron Gillis (3-3), who retired 13 of the next 16 batters he faced after allowing his third-inning run and held the Renegades scoreless over the next four innings before getting into trouble in the eighth.

After retiring the leadoff hitter, Gillis allowed a bloop single to Matt Chaidez and after a stolen base, Ryan Tella drove Chaidez in with an RBI-single to center, making it 5-2.

But reliever Taylor Kruger came in and got helped Gillis out of his eighth-inning jam. After a batter reached on a fielder’s choice, Kruger coaxed Kainoa Crowell into a 5-4-3 double play, ending the threat and keeping the Mustangs up, 5-2.

Pruett finished the afternoon allowing five runs (all earned) on nine hits, with three walks and three strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings to take the hardluck loss.

Gillis was even more impressive, allowing just two runs and five hits over 7 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out two to earn the win.

In the ninth, Ohlone looked for some two-out magic when Code DeMera walked and scored on an RBI-double to right off the bat of Joel Thys, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

Pinch-hitter Sean Yoshikawa followed with a walk and Matt Chaidez loaded the bases when his ground ball was misplayed by Delta shortstop Ricky Acosta, bringing up Tella, the Coast Pacific Conference MVP.

Tella ripped a shot down the first-base line, but Mustangs’ first baseman Jake Cose made a game-saving snag of the ground ball and beat Tella to the bag to send both teams into a second-game, winner-take-all.

Despite the late-inning drama, Kruger earned his eighth save of the season.

Tella finished the afternoon with two hits and two RBI for Ohlone. Tyler Shepard went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Delta.
