Jermaine Smith Joins Cal State Northridge Basketball Program
June 4, 2007 - 'The Cal State Northridge men’s basketball program has added size and strength to their 2007-08 Matador roster with the signing of Jermaine Smith, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward from Ohlone Junior College in Fremont, Ca (Bay Area). “Jermaine Smith is our kind of player,” said head coach Bobby Braswell. “He is a great athlete who can get up and down the court. Jermaine Smith Signs Letter of Intent to Attend Division 1 Cal State Northridge
6’9” power forward Jermaine Smith signed a National Letter of Intent today and will transfer to NCAA Division 1 California State University, Northridge. Smith was a 2 year starter for Ohlone and helped lead them to a 28 – 4 record this past season. He averaged 11 points, 7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game. Northridge competes in the Big West Conference.
Willis Gardner Signs With Division 1 Colorado State University
6’1” sophomore PG Willis Gardner has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball next year at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO for new head coach Tim Miles. Gardner, who was the Coast Conference MVP and 1st team All State, will have 2 years of eligibility remaining. Colorado State plays in the Mountain West Conference with UNLV, BYU, Utah, Air Force, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Gardner chose CSU over Temple, Wright State, Louisiana Tech, Loyola Marymount, Long Beach State and La Salle. His intended major is Education. Read these articles: Times Herald, Coloradoan.
Allen Hester Signs Letter of Intent With Division 1 Ohio University
6’1” Sophomore guard Allen Hester (St. Joseph’s, Alameda) has signed a letter of intent to finish his career at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Hester, who was a first team all conference selection, chose Ohio over Northern Arizona and Montana State. Hester averaged 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2 assists per game. He also shot 42% from the 3 point line on the year. Ohio plays in the Mid America Conference, with such schools as Akron, Kent State, Miami (OH) and Bowling Green. He is the second former Renegade to sign with Ohio, following 2 time All State performer Mychal Green. Green graduated from Ohio in 2006 with a degree in business and now plays professionally in New Zealand.
Hamidou Coulibaly Signs Letter of Intent With Hawaii Pacific University
6’9 Freshman center Hamidou “Baba” Coulibaly has signed a national Letter of Intent to play next season at NCAA Division 2 Hawaii Pacific University. Coulibaly averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds per game. He leaves Ohlone with 3 years of basketball remaining. His intended major is International Business. He chose Hawaii Pacific over several other Division 2 and NAIA schools.
Renardo Bass Signs Letter of Intent With Division 2 Powerhouse CSU San Bernadino
6’3” guard Renardo Bass has signed a national letter of intent to play for the California State University – San Bernadino Roadrunners. Bass was a 1st team all conference selection and a 2nd team all state selection after averaging 11 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks per game. CSUSB finished last season 26 – 6 and lost in the Final Four by 1 point to eventual National Champion Barton College. Bass chose CSUSB over Eastern Washington, Monmouth and Gardner Webb.
Sean Amos Signs Letter of Intent With Division 2 Adams State College
6’3” guard Sean Amos signed a national letter of intent to play next season at Division 2 Adams State College in Alamosa, CO. Amos averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds after transferring from Luzerne Junior College. Adams State plays in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, one of the toughest in the country. Last season they made the NCAA tournament for the first time in the last 10 years. He chose Adams State over Houston Baptist, Lewis and Clark and West Chester.

- Sam Kim (’06) – Finished his junior year at Black Hills State U. Named Dakota 10 Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year and 3rd team all conference after averaging 12 ppg and shooting 42% from the field.
- Lloyd Russell (’06) – Finished his sophomore year at Western New Mexico University. Averaged 1 .1 points and 4.3 mpg.
- Kevin Johnson (’05) – Finished his junior year at Adams State College. Team made NCAA tournament. Kevin averaged 11 minutes, 3 points and 3 rebounds.
- Aaron Parker (’05) – Finished his junior season at Notre Dame De Namur. Started 13 games, averaged 21 minutes per game and 7 ppg.
- Ryan Cooper (’05) - Finished his junior season at Notre Dame De Namur. Named 1st team all Pac West Conference after averaging 12 ppg.

This Great Eight lacks a clear-cut favorite, Ventura County Star, March 7, 2007 - "Coaches around the state may say Antelope Valley or Ohlone are the strongest or Compton and Yuba are the hottest from the respective regions, but the California community college championships will begin Thursday without a clear-cut favorite for the first time in years."
March 5, 2007 - The Renegades escaped with a 63 – 60 victory over Delta College on Saturday night, March 3, to win the northern California regional and advance to the state tournament. This is only the second time in school history that men’s basketball has advanced to the state tournament (Coach Dick Walsh took a team back when there were two separate divisions in 1985). We open on Thursday at 1:00pm against Antelope Valley (Lancaster, CA) who is 29 – 6 on the year. Should we win, we would matchup with the winner of Ventura and Yuba. The two other games are West Hills vs. Saddleback and Fresno City vs. Compton. All 4 quarterfinal games are on Thursday, March 8 at 1:00pm, 3:00pm, 5:00pm, 7:00pm. The semifinals are Saturday at 1:00pm and 3:00pm and the finals are Sunday at 1:00pm. All games are being played at Selland Arena in Fresno.

#2 seeded Ohlone College Renegades (27 – 3) host the 7th seeded San Joaquin Delta Mustangs (22 – 10) this Saturday, March 3, 2007 at 7 pm. The Mustangs are lead by 6’10” Michael Nunnally. Nunnally, who has signed with UOP, averages 19 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks per game and is the best big man in California. Game tips off at 7 pm at Epler Gymnasium, Ohlone College, Fremont. Ticket prices are $7 for general admission, $5 for faculty/staff/students/seniors/kids under 12. Sorry, no passes are accepted for state tournament games.
Please show up early as Delta is bringing over two rooter buses! We hope to have the largest crowd in the history of the program, and it should be an entertaining game.
Additionally, the basketball program will be raffling off an Apple 30gb video iPod valued at $300 as a fundraiser (thanks to a donation by Apple). Amos leads 5 Renegades in Double Figures in First Round Playoff Win
February 26, 2007 - Sophomore Sean Amos picked a great night for a career high, as he scored 19 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in Saturday’s 86 – 65 win over College of the Redwoods. Amos was one of 5 Renegades in double figures on the night, as Renardo Bass had 13 points and 5 rebounds, Bert Whittington had 12 points, Jermaine Smith had 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks and Allen Hester had 11 points. Ohlone, the Norcal #2 seed, moves its record to 27 – 3, and Redwoods finishes the season at 19 – 13. The Corsairs were paced by freshman Tom Higgins, who scored 22 points on 6 – 9 shooting from the 3 point line.

Ohlone the #2 seed, Home Game on Saturday the 24th at 7 pm
After finishing the regular season with a 26-3 record and a Coast Conference Championship, the Renegades were rewarded with the #2 seed in the Northern California Playoff Bracket. They will face the winner of tonight’s play in game between #16 Redwoods and #17 Santa Rosa. The game will be Saturday, February 24 at Ohlone College at 7 pm. Ticket prices are $7 for adults, $5 for students/faculty/staff/seniors and kids under 12.

Willis Gardner was named the Coast Conference Most Valuable Player. Joining the sophomore PG on the all conference team were 6’3 guard Renardo Bass, 6’0 PG Bert Whittington and 6’2 guard Allen Hester. Patrick Collier, 6’3 guard, was named to honorable mention team.
Renegades Lose Season Finale
#1 ranked Ohlone College lost to rival San Francisco City on the road Friday night, February 16, by a final score of 84 – 76. Willis Gardner led the Renegades with 19 points. Ohlone finishes the season at 26-3, 10-2 in conference.
Ohlone College Wins Third Coast Conference North Title
February 15, 2007 - Ohlone College captured its third Coast Conference North title in the past five years with a 76-64 win over visiting Skyline on February 14, setting a single-season school record for victories (26) in the process. Ranked No. 1 in the state, Ohlone (26-2, 10-1) will finish the regular season Friday, February 16, at No. 5 City College of San Francisco.
Final Regular Season Home Game on Wednesday vs. Skyline College
The Renegade Men’s team - ranked #1 in the State of California - plays it’s last regular season home game Wednesday, February 14, at 7 pm vs. Skyline College. On the line is the league championship (2 game lead with 2 to play) and a school record for wins (hopefully 26). It is the last “free” look as the playoffs will cost money (playoff gate is run by the state and no passes are accepted). Come out and cheer for our sophomores (Renardo Bass, Bert Whittington, Jermaine Smith, Sean Amos, Giovanni Vernon, Brandon Lott, Willis Gardner, Patrick Collier, Mike Holmes, Allen Hester) in their last regular season home contest.

Ohlone Retains Top Spot in Coach’s Poll
February 13, 2007 - Ohlone College Men’s Basketball team was once again voted #1 in both the Northern California and State Polls. With a total of 425 points, Ohlone edged out Bakersfield College (385 points) for this week’s top spot. Both teams had the same number of votes and shared the top ranking last week. Rounding out the top ten are Riverside, DVC, San Francisco, Ventura, West Hills, Chaffey, Fresno and San Bernadino Valley.
Ohlone Overcomes Poor Shooting, Beats LPC on the Road
Shooting just 3 – 24 from the 3 point line, the #1 ranked Renegades had to rely on it’s defense to edge Las Positas College on Saturday night, 82 – 65. The win tied the record for most in school history, previously set by the 2002 – 2003 squad, with 25. It also moved Ohlone one step closer to clinching the conference championship. The Renegades (9 – 1, 25 – 2) currently have a one game lead over San Francisco (8 – 2, 25 – 5) with 2 to play. The remaining games are home Wednesday night at 7 pm versus Skyline College (6 – 18, 2 – 8) and at San Francisco on Friday.
Renardo Bass led the Renegades with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Jermaine Smith and Willis Gardner each chipped in with 10 points apiece.
Showdown with Chabot this Saturday, February 3
#2 ranked Renegades (23 - 2, 7 – 1 conference) play host to the 15th ranked Chabot Gladiators (19 – 9, 5 – 3 conference) on Saturday night at 5pm. Chabot handed Ohlone its only loss in conference, thoroughly outplaying OC at their place. That game also brought Ohlone’s 16 game win streak to an end. Ohlone needs the win to maintain 1st place in conference.
2nd Ranked Renegades handle Foothill on the road, 63 – 58
Overcoming a sloppy first half and the excellent play of the host Owls, Ohlone snuck out with a road win 63 - 58 on Wednesday, January 31. Ohlone was led by Allen Hester’s 23 points, 10 of which came in the last 3 minutes (2 3’s and 4 free throws) to give Ohlone just enough cushion. After turning the ball over 10 times in the first half and scoring just 23 points, Ohlone only gave the ball away twice in the last 20 minutes while putting 40 points on the board. Renardo Bass chipped in with 8 points and 6 rebounds, and Bert Whittington only scored 2 points but had just 1 turnover in 32 minutes. Ohlone moves to 23 – 2, 7 – 1 in conference.
Scrappy Ohlone collects big win

In front of a lively home crowd, the host Renegades pulled out a 72-68 victory over City College of San Francisco in Coast Conference North play Wednesday.
"We knew we had to come out and play hard and scrappy because they're bigger," said Ohlone's 6-foot-9 forward Jermaine Smith, who scored a team-high 15 points. Read more...

#4 Ohlone vs. #2 San Francisco on Wednesday Night, January 24, at 7 pm
The 4th ranked Renegades (20 – 2, 4 – 1) play host to the 2nd ranked Rams (21 – 3, 5 – 0) this Wednesday at 7 pm in Epler Gymnasium. This will be the first meeting between the two teams in league play. Ohlone won the first matchup of the year, 81 – 70, to win the Delta College Holiday Tournament on December 17th. The game features two of the hottest teams in the north. City comes in winners of 7 in a row, while Ohlone has only lost once since November 12th. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door.
Ohlone Ranked 4th in the State, 3rd in the North in the latest poll (1/22/07)
The Renegades moved up one spot in both the northern and state polls this week. The new #1 is Diablo Valley College, followed by CCSF, Bakersfield, Ohlone, Riverside, Chaffey, Saddleback, Ventura, Merced and West Valley.
Ohlone Wins it’s 20th of the year at Skyline, 83-74
The Renegades notched their 20th win of the year on the road with a hard fought victory at Skyline College, 83-74. This marks the 6th time in seven years that Ohlone has won 20 or more games in a season. Point guard play was the key to victory as Bert Whittington and Willis Gardner combined for 37 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists while committing just 2 turnovers. Whittington led all scorers with 21 points (4 3 point shots) and Gradner chipped in with 16. Mike Holmes had 13 off the bench, and Allen Hester had 10.
The Renegades move to 20-2, 4-1 in league play and remain 1 game out of first place.
Ohlone by a Nose: Ohlone Edges Bakersfield For No. 1

In one of the closest ballotings in recent memory, Ohlone College has edged Bakersfield for the No. 1 spot in this week’s California Community Colleges Men’s Basketball Coaches Association Poll.
Either way, it could be the year of the Renegades.
The Ohlone Renegades edged the Bakersfield Renegades by 11 points in the poll. Ohlone benefited from receiving 19 of the 21 Northern California No. 1 votes, while Bakersfield failed it wooing all the south’s No. 1 votes. Bakersfield received 18 first-place votes.
Ohlone becomes the fourth team this season to hold the No. 1 spot with six weeks remaining in the regular season.
Riverside, which received two, first-place votes, finished third in polling this week for the second consecutive week, while Diablo Valley and San Francisco finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Each received a first-place vote, but Diablo Valley held of the Rams by one point.
Antelope Valley came in at No. 6, with West Valley, Merced, Chaffey and Ventura rounding out the Top 10. Merced proved to be this week’s biggest mover, moving five spot from No. 13 last week to No. 8 this week. At the same time, Modesto was this biggest mover down as the Pirates fell 11 points to No. 19 in the poll.

Ohlone Extends Win Streak To 9 Games
The Ohlone College Men’s Basketball team, ranked #2 in the state of California, moved it’s current win streak to 9 games with a hard fought victory over Merritt College, 61-53. The Renegades were held to 23 points below their season scoring average, and finally pulled away from the Thunderbirds in the last 3 minutes. Bert Whittington’s three point play, followed by Jermaine Smith’s tip in basket ultimately sealed the victory. PG Willis Gardner led all scorers with 14 points. G Renardo Bass chipped in with 10, and PF Jermaine Smith had 10 points and a career high 17 rebounds. The Renegades move to 11-1 on the season.
Up next is 4th ranked Modesto College (13-2) in the first round of the San Joaquin Delta Tournament in Stockton. Tip – off is 1 pm. In addition to Ohlone and Modesto, the tournament features several of Northern California’s top teams, including #3 San Francisco, #8 Merced, and # 12 Delta.
#2 Ranked Renegades Win 6th Straight
The men’s basketball team returned home last night and beat Solano College, 82 – 61. After squandering a 12 point 1st half lead, Ohlone opened the 2nd half with 8 straight points on their way to their 8th victory in 9 games. Shooting a blistering 73% from the 3 point line in the second half (8 – 11), the Renegades got three point field goal from 8 different players. Overall in the 2nd half, Ohlone shot 65% from the floor (17-26), putting 52 points on the board in that span.
6’9” PF Jermaine Smith led the Renegades in scoring with 19 points, to go along with 12 rebounds. Point guards Bert Whittington and Willis Gardner chipped in with 13 and 12, respectively.
Ohlone takes the floor again on Saturday night at home vs. Hartnell College (5-4) at 5 pm and again on Sunday afternoon vs. Siskiyous (2-6) at 3 pm.
Ohlone Wins DVC Invitational, Moves to 7 - 1
The 14th ranked Renegades Men’s Basketball team avenged its only loss of the season by beating #2 Diablo Valley College on the road Sunday night, 75 – 61. Trailing by as much as 11 in the first half, Ohlone stormed back to close the gap to 1 at the half, 32-31. Then the pressure and depth took its toll, as the Ohlone guards were too much to handle as they pulled away with a flurry at the 4 minute mark. Wing Renardo Bass scored 14 points and had 16 rebounds in the final to earn the tourney MVP. He was joined on the all tournament team by SG Allen Hester and PG Willis Gardner. Ohlone reached the finals by beating Butte College (98-49) and Merritt College (92-66).
Ohlone Ranked #1 in the North, #2 in the State
The Ohlone Renegades were ranked #1 in the north and second in the state behind Riverside by the coaches after winning the DVC Invitational over the weekend. With a group that features 11 sophomores, the Renegades are averaging 84 points per game, and their stifling defense is allowing just 62 points per game. The team is currently 7-1 on the season.
High Scoring Renegades at Home for Next 4 Games
The OC Men’s Basketball team is at home for the next four games: versus Solano on the 29th at 6pm, versus Hartnell on Saturday the 2nd at 5 pm, versus Siskiyous on Sunday the 3rd at 3 pm and versus Merritt on Friday the 8th at 7 pm. The Renegades are currently ranked #1 in the North and #2 in the State.

Former Renegade Mychal Green Signs Pro Contract
Former Ohlone College Men’s Basketball player Mychal Green signed a contract yesterday with the Utah Eagles of the Continental Basketball Association. The 6’4, 208 lb guard played for the Renegades from 2002 – 2004. He was named to the All-State team both years, and earned conference MVP honors as a sophomore after averaging 26 ppg in league play. He played at Ohio University his junior and senior years, leading the Bobcats to the NCAA tournament as a junior. Ohio lost to Florida in the first round, a game in which Mychal scored 26 points. He received his degree from Ohio U. in Business this past spring.
After graduation, Mychal had pre-draft tryouts with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers. He turned down several offers to go overseas in order to stay in the states and pursue his goal of playing in the NBA. You can check out the Utah Eagles website at www.utaheagles.com.
