Ohlone head coach John Peterson and assistant Justin Carter helped guide the USA All Star team to a 9-0 record on its recent tour of China. The team was comprised of 10 players, 7 of whom played last season in the NBA Developmental League or on professional teams in Europe. Team USA played Germany, Lithuania and the Chinese National B team in three separate cities (Liuzhou, Taiyuan and Guangzhou) for a total of 9 games in 12 days. Team USA was led by Lamonte Ulmer (U. of Rhode Island/Luxembourg) who averaged 15.8 ppg and 5.9 rpg; Tyler Cain (South Dakota/Latvia) at 11.9 ppg and 9.8 rpg; and PG Lance Jeter (Nebraska/Holland) who averaged 8 ppg and 4 apg. China provided by far the best competition and had a lineup featuring 3 players who were recently cut by the Olympic team and 5 players over 7 feet. Each of the China – USA games came down to the final minute in front of huge crowds, with the USA prevailing 77-70, 74-72 and 72-70.
“It was a great experience both culturally and from a coaching standpoint”, said Peterson. “The international game is completely different form the collegiate game in terms of physicality and skill sets, and coaching with a 24 second shot clock presented a unique challenge. I was honored to have been asked to serve as head coach for such a talented group of players in such a competitive setting.”
