Ohlone's defense fails vs. Cabrillo

Fremont—During Ohlone College's run to the California Junior College Elite Eight last year, it encountered few teams that shared its type of competitive spirit.

That was something coach John Peterson took pride in and hoped to instill in this year's squad, but after Ohlone squandered a 22-10 lead against Cabrillo to lose 72-64 on Saturday, Peterson admitted the team has a lot of work to do.

"I don't think this team likes losing either," he said. "But we're not there yet. We'll get there, but we're not there."

Peterson was especially displeased with his team's play on the defensive end.

Cabrillo created some defensive rotation problems for Ohlone with good ball movement and was able to get open shots from the perimeter. It took advantage, knocking down nine 3-pointers—including five from Kevin Konopelski—to build the lead in the second half.

"There has to be more intensity," Peterson said. "We are more intense in practice than we were tonight. That's what is the most disappointing."

The Renegades (9-7) trailed by as many as 14 in the second half and were forced to launch ill-advised 3-pointers to have a chance to get back in the game. They did manage to hit seven of them, but simply ran out of time and were forced to foul with almost three minutes left in the game.

Cabrillo (11-7) went 8-for-12 from the line in the second half, which was good enough to keep the Renegades at bay.

Eric Pitts came out on fire or the Renegades, scoring 12 first-half points and finished with a team-high 19. Chancious Rose was the only other Ohlone player in double-figures, finishing with 10 points.

The Renegades defeated Cabrillo 77-65 earlier in the season and will go on the road for their last non-conference game at Shasta College on Wednesday.

Coast Conference play begins on Jan.12 against Canada College.
