With a 70-62 home victory over No. 10 ranked Cabrillo College of Aptos on Friday, Feb. 29, No. 7 ranked Ohlone College moved on to second round play in the 16 team Nor Cal Region Tournament. Their opponent will be Fresno City College on Saturday, March 8, at 7 p.m. PST. As the No. 2 ranked team in Nor Cal, Fresno will be the host for the two teams playing for a spot in the eighth team California State CC Tournament to be played Thursday - Saturday, March 14 - 16, at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.
This was the third meeting this year between second place finisher, Ohlone, of Coast Conference North, and first place winner Cabrillo, of Coast Conference South. The Renegades won the first meeting back in November, 83-74, in the finals of the Ohlone Jonathan Wallace Memorial Tournament. Cabrillo would even the season series with a 72-62 Coast Conference victory in early January, also played on the Renegades' campus.
Friday's third and final meeting, again at Ohlone, was for the season, as the winner would move on and the loser was done for the year. The game started out slowly as neither team could find the bottom of the basket with any regularity. This was due in part by both teams playing great defensive basketball. Cabrillo had allowed an average of only 52 points per game, second in the state, and liked to play a penetrating style of offense. When the Renegades were able to stop a lot of the Seahawks' drives to the basket, and with both teams not hitting many outside shots from two or three point range, it meant for low scoring as the half ended 28-20 in favor of Ohlone.
Second half saw the scoring pick-up as Cabrillo got more penetration and close in baskets while the Renegades starting draining three point shots. Freshman James Hancock of Ohlone led the scoring with two, three pointers and 13 points in the second half. This, added to his seven first half points, gave him a game high 20 points. Hancock's 20 points were backed up by fellow freshman Amarildo Matos, with 13 points, including two, three pointers. Freshman Tim Bowman and Leon Hart (formerly of Hayward High) each added eight points.
Ohlone is led by Head Coach John Peterson, Assistant Head Coach, Ryan Irmer, and Assistant Coaches, Rich Burnett and Justin Carter.
Earlier in the year, Ohlone lost to Fresno CC 76-73 in a game in which Ohlone led by 15 points at one time. According to Coach Peterson, Fresno makes you play faster than you want to play. The Renegades will be looking to even the series with the 2007-2008 season on the line for both teams.
Ohlone Women's Basketball played Las Positas of Livermore in the a Women's Nor Cal Tournament play-in game last Wednesday, Feb. 27, and were defeated 71-68 in Livermore. This ended the season for the Lady Renegades who posted a final record of 18-12.
Chabot of Hayward's men's basketball team also participated in the post season. First, they had to win a play-in game to make the sixteen team Nor Cal Region field and did so by defeating Los Positas of Livermore 68-48 last Wednesday. Then they traveled to Fresno last Saturday, March 1, where their season ended in an 81-74 loss to Fresno City College, Ohlone's next opponent. Chabot finished the season at 21-14.
Good luck to the Ohlone men's basketball team in Fresno this coming Saturday.
