HAYWARD—Going into Friday night's Coast Conference North men's basketball game against Chabot College, Ohlone coach John Peterson had felt his team was playing pretty well of late.
The Renegades came into the matchup leading City College of San Francisco by half-game for first place, and thanks to a dominating performance by its big men, Ohlone still leads the league after taking a 63-43 win over the host Gladiators.
"Our big guys are very effective when they stay out of foul trouble," Peterson said. "They gave a great effort tonight."
Peterson was specifically referring to the play of Alpha N'Diaye and James Hancock, as the two combined for 31 points, nearly half of Ohlone's total on the night.
N'Diaye's 3-point play put the Renegades up 18-12 midway through the first half, sparking a 17-6 run that built a 14-point halftime lead.
Chabot tried to claw back into the game, but the Renegades' defense would not allow it.
The final 20 minutes went much the same way, with N'Diaye hitting several outside shots and putbacks to build the lead to as many as 25 points. N'Diaye finished with 19 points, while Hancock scored 13 and teammate Ronnie Sawyer chipped in with eight points.
Along with maintaining the conference lead, Ohlone avenged a 71-65 loss to Chabot on Jan. 21.
"We absolutely wanted to get them back for beating us earlier in the season," Peterson said. "Our goal is to win out the season and gain a top four seed in the upcoming playoffs."
The Gladiators were led by Brandon Wagner's 15 points with three 3-pointers. Wagoner was the only player in double figures for Chabot.
