Before the Ohlone Renegades and Chabot Gladiators men's basketball teams met on Friday, Feb. 13, to renew their rivalry, they both had impressive road victories.
Each team took to the road on Wednesday night, Feb. 11, before clashing against each other on Chabot's home court Friday night.
For Chabot, they traveled to Canada College. The Gladiators were able to establish a comfortable lead early, scoring 42 first-half points. However, in the second half, their offense went stagnant. They only tallied 25 points.
Canada, however, couldn't capitalize. Chabot's defense took over down the stretch and they were able to prevail, 67-63. The Gladiators had four men with double-digit scoring - Brandone Wagner (10), Jourdan Demuynck (12), Mark Stevenson (10) and Derrick Bruce (11) - which helped lead them to victory.
Ohlone made way to Foothill College on Wednesday night in preparation for its contest with Chabot. They were able to cruise to a double-digit victory with strong games on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Ohlone won their second in a row, and 10th in 12 games with the 74-61 victory.
Chabot hosted Ohlone on Friday, Feb. 13, with both teams looking to improve their standing in the Coast-North Division standings.
Chabot was flat, while Ohlone was flying. Ohlone was able to spread the ball, and the scoring. And the Renegades' defense was even more solid than their offense.
On the other side of the ball, Chabot only had one player that showed up to the game: Brandone Wagner, who totaled 15 of the Gladiators' 43 points.
Ohlone allowed 18 points in the first and 25 in the second half, and cruised to victory, 63-43. They now hold a slim, half-game lead over San Francisco City College in the Coast-North standings with a 9-2 league record. SFCC holds a record of 8-2. Chabot sits in a third-place tie with Foothill at 5-5 in league play.
Next for Chabot is a Wednesday, Feb. 18, road game at Skyline, at 7 p.m., followed by a regular-season finale against SFCC at home on Friday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m.
And for Ohlone, they conclude their season, looking to win the Coast-North outright, with games on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at home against Canada at 7 p.m.; and at San Jose City on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m.
