Fremont—The Ohlone men's basketball team turned to the 3-point shot to break open a tight game in the second half on their way to a 85-63 win over Merritt College in the opening round of the California Community College playoffs.
James Hancock scored 17 of his 19 points after the break, while Kevan West nailed five 3-pointers as the Renegades used an 11-1 burst midway through the second half to turn an eight point lead into a 63-45 advantage that would not be threatened the rest of the way.
Other key contributors for Ohlone were Alpha N'Diaye with 14 points, and Ronnie Sawyer, who scored 13 points, hitting a couple of 3-point baskets that helped the Renegades pull away.
"The difference was us going to man to man on defense in the second half," Ohlone coach John Peterson said, "Our conditioning also paid off for us."
The win puts the Renegades into a second round matchup with Reedley College on March 7 in Fremont, with the winner advancing to the championships at Selland Arena in Fresno.
The Thunderbirds despite never leading the entire game, were within stiking distance most of the game, but couldn't match Ohlone's energy the final ten minutes.
Drew Pughsley led Merritt with 17 points, while Joe Powell scored 15, and Karel Mitchell 14.
