Ohlone College sophomore Ronnie Sawyer scored 18 of his team-high 23 points in the first half on Wednesday night, but the one field goal he made after intermission was huge.
Sawyer's 3-pointer from the left corner stopped a Foothill-Los Altos Hills rally, tied the game at 69 and spurred the Renegades to a 77-72 win over the visiting Owls in their Coast Conference North Division opener at Epler Gymnasium.
Ohlone sophomore Scott Clark from Foothill High sealed the victory with six straight free throws in the final 22 seconds. The Owls, who trailed 41-28 at halftime, cut the deficit to 73-72 on Matt Christman's 3-pointer with nine seconds left.
"He's been money," Ohlone coach John Peterson said of Clark. "He's been great. He can really stroke it."
As usual, there are no soft touches in the Coast-North, which boasts the top three ranked teams in the Northern California—City College of San Francisco, Ohlone and Chabot by the Coaches Poll on JCScores.com. Foothill is ranked seventh. In the state rankings, Ohlone (12-3) is fifth and Foothill (11-5) is 17th, with CCSF No. 1.
Ohlone, which has won four of the last six conference titles, has faced Foothill three times this season. The Renegades lost to the Owls by seven early in the season, then beat them 56-52 on Dec. 20.
"When we play them there's always a battle out there," said Sawyer, out of Rahway High (N.J.). "We have to guard them on the 3-point line basically and grab the rebounds."
