The Ohlone College men's basketball team had some question marks entering the 2009-10 campaign, including if it could repeat last season's success and which players would step up and be the go-to person.
On Saturday in a North Regional final-round game of the California Community College Athletic Association, the Renegades had answers to both questions as Reggie Jones had 25 points and Scott Clark terrorized the Yuba defense. The No. 1 seed Renegades (24-4) defeated the visiting 49ers 75-65 to advance to the CCCAA State Championships for the second year in succession. Four Northern California teams in both the men's and women's divisions advance to the state championships on March 12-14 at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.
Ohlone has won eight in a row and 19 of its last 20.
"The guys really put a lot of hard work for this team and their unselfish play has really developed on what kind of team they are," Ohlone coach John Peterson said. "We had so many guys step up tonight and that's how it's been during the season."
Clark blanketed Yuba sharp-shooter Bo Henning for most of the second half, holding Henning to just three points after torching the Ohlone defense with 14 first-half points. Clark also pulled down eight rebounds as Ohlone outrebounded Yuba 39-19.
The Renegades held a 38-37 halftime lead before going on a 12-0 run in a three-minute span in the second half to take a 56-44 lead.
Yuba (25-5) trimmed the Renegades lead to four, but Ohlone made its last nine free throws to put the game out of reach.
The Renegades' Lavon Gray finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds while teammate Ronnie Sawyer (14 points) was also in double figures in scoring. Henning and Mike McChristian led the 49ers with 17 points each and Kyle Allen added 14 for Yuba.
