2013 Coach Biography: James "Butch" McGrew, Assistant Coach - Ohlone Renegades Men's Soccer

Butch McGrew enters his fifth season as an assistant coach at Ohlone College in 2008. Coach McGrew will serve Ohlone College as an Assistant Coach with responsibilities to include recruitment, fundraising, community involvement and compliance.
Coach McGrew was a well-rounded athlete playing goalkeeper in the local community league and lettering in baseball at Santa Teresa HS and later went onto play in the Latin American baseball league.
Over the past 20 years, Coach McGrew has been in the business world holding managerial positions at ReSound, Maxim and Telebit Corporations. His latest position was of 10 years as a Sr. Manager at Boston Scientific. For the last 14 years, Butch has been professionally training soccer teams ranging in age from 7 to 18 in technique and tactics with aspirations of a change in careers. When the Ohlone position opened up Coach McGrew made the decision that it was time for a change.
Coach McGrew has been involved heavily with the California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) and has attained United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National "D" status in 2006 and was invited onto the CYSA Instructional staff by Karl Dewazien, State Coaching Director.
Coach McGrew has also trained in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America under Tony Waiters, Greg Miles and Richard Reece to obtain recognition as a National Goalkeeping coach in 2005.
In 2005 Butch obtained recognition by the National Endurance & Sports Trainers Association in the area of Speed, Agility and Quickness.
In 2008 Butch obtained recognition by the International Sports Science Association as a Certified Fitness Trainer.
Coach McGrew has traveled all over the country watching and participating in different soccer events to further his knowledge of the game and to gain needed experiences for his future success in the Ohlone program. These events include: prestigious soccer tournaments such as San Diego Surf Cup (2005-2007), various college showcases, and a variety of highly respected coaching courses.
Besides his immense love of the game and coaching, Coach McGrew loves to watch his two daughters, Meghan (age 20) and Caitlin (age 16), play competitive soccer, as well as being a positive role model for the players he trains and/or coaches.
Butch plans to use his knowledge of the game and his expertise in fitness training to make an impact on the Ohlone Soccer Program. He feels that his past experiences as an athlete will help him to relate to the team and looks forward to the upcoming season.
