Team News, 2009 Season - Ohlone Renegades Men's Soccer
Match Report: Ohlone stifles Cal State East Bay
Saturday, April 25, 2009.
The Renegades men’s soccer took to the road again as part of their non-traditional season competitions this spring. Although a game victory was not going to count toward much, a moral victory certainly would. The Ohlone side faced a strong East Bay team, interim coached by former Ohlone Coach Don Williams.
The Renegades opened fast and strong with a penetrating run from a kick off deep into Cal States defensive third. The charge would be lead by forwards Daniel Ferrarese and Andrew Peixoto. CSUSB would be solid at the back and deflected away an early flurry of chances by Ohlone.
The Ohlone side certainly looked more settled and intense then the opening moments of their previous match against Mission. Cal State then settled in and began to ping sharp crisp passes and put a forward march forcing Daniel Galloway, starting keeper to deflect or save several shots around the goal.
Ohlone looked a bit frazzled and indecisive since the Cal State were throwing everyone forward obviously seeking an early goal, but that would reserved for the visiting side as a counter attacked developed 9 minutes in when left front runner Daniel Ferrarese was taken down and the whistle was blown.
Weihan Jin hit a high lofting ball to the far post, in a battle to reach it, center mid Marc Wilson caught it off the header and found glory beating the keeper over the head and into the net for Ohlone’s first goal under new Coach Nordmo.
The team was super charged and the confidence on the field could felt on every blade of grass the Renegades touched. Ohlone began to match the Cal State side on its passing and defending. The back line was almost impenetrable as it was anchored by Jin, Cody Nathan and Joel Higgins.
About 48 minutes in Cal State would level the score off a corner kick that was initially broken down at the penalty spot when keeper Iman Aghel caught a part of it on a punch, but Cal State was there to scoop it up and finish at point blank.
Despite the equalizer, the Renegades were still hungry to get another goal and a much deserved win. It would not be for this day, but the Ohlone men were establishing themselves as a team that would quickly leave behind memories of last season and look forward to an improved season next fall.
The Renegades will play their last non-traditional season match on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, 5 PM kick off at DeAnza.
