After a dismal 2008 year, new men's soccer Head Coach Jan Nordmo was brought in to turn the ship around for the Renegades in Fremont. However, last Friday's season opener against West Hills College from Lemoore was not what he had in mind as Ohlone dropped their first game of the 2009 season, 2-0.
"I'm positive," Nordmo said after the game. "We needed to evaluate some of our players and using this as an evaluation tool, I think we got a lot of things to look at as a team."
The Renegades simply didn't seem to have anything going for them throughout the game, barely pushing past the Falcons backline throughout the game.
West Hills, on the other hand, had no problems weaving through the Renegades defense; however Renegades goalkeeper Daniel Galloway made key saves on almost all of West Hills' opportunities. He recorded 13 saves on 26 total shots.
Galloway, who converted to goalkeeper in the spring, started in front of last year's goalkeeper Iman Aghel, who missed the start against West Hills due to a preseason injury.
"For us to put him in there and for him to play the way he did was outstanding," Nordmo commented on his converted goalkeeper. "I recognize early in spring that he has some good athletic abilities in the goal and he was clearly somebody who was very coachable."
Although Galloway played well, West Hills still found a way to break through, scoring in the 24th minute on a goal by forward Anthony Robinson as he was able to get the ball past the outstretched left arm of Galloway. West Hills would score again midway through the second half on a free kick, catching Galloway, and the Ohlone defense, out of position to go up 2-0.
Ohlone came out much more aggressive in the second half, however the West Hills backline shut down nearly every Renegades opportunity, limiting them to just six shots for the game.
The Renegades look to avoid another 0-15-0 start as they continue their three-game home stand, taking on Gavilan College on Tuesday, September 1 (results not available for press), and conclude the home stand against Monterey Peninsula on Tuesday, September 8. Both games kick off at 1:30 p.m.
