Match Report: Ohlone not shy, shows stuff in win over Monterey Peninsula College

  • Game Day: Tuesday, September 8, 2009
  • Ohlone of Coast South Division, Non-Conference Match
  • Monterey Peninsula @ Ohlone
  • Ohlone 3, Monterey Peninsula 1

Off to its second win of the season, the Renegades of Ohlone scored two solid goals to continue establishing themselves in the 2009 season. While two wins does not mean a team is going to win league and the championship, the early wins certainly helps Ohlone’s confidence going forward and it is not just the wins, they are playing well; creating chances and forcing luck to side with them.

Nothing lucky about Ohlone’s first goal, found as Dustin Richards, sophomore midfielder, slots a right wing ball from near center line that splits Monterey backs and is smartly picked up by Pierre Bruggeman, freshman forward, at about 35 yards off the left post.

Bruggeman carries solo to corner of goal box and pastes the ball to the bottom of the cross bar where it finds the keeper’s back post netting after sharply ungluing itself, goal Ohlone.

Opportunities would come near frequently for both squads, in the first half. Monterey would level the score as a broken defensive fumble near mid circle resulted in a strange query that found the left front runner for MP, Elmer Aguilera, lobbing goalkeeper Daniel Galloway, sophomore, on near post, and on to crashing midfielder, Charles Seymore, freshman, for Monterey, score now even.

As both teams pushed Galloway was forced into four saves, first half, a few more in the second. Ohlone were pressured now, but would open half two with several strikes on goal, one most notably from Freshman sensation, George Mayer II, as he took a corner kick near the penalty box far post, blasting low across the keeper’s (Courtney Frost, freshman) right post.

Ohlone played with far more confidence in the second period, gaining possession and credit for crisp passing and smart defending. MPC found opportunities against a sometimes soft Ohlone defense, but, Mayer’s long arm throw-in near mid second half found two Ohlone attackers, Jarrod Fluke and Sean Randall both on the hunt with each putting a touch, but Randall, freshman getting the “go ahead” goal and final point of the game.

Ohlone, while sometimes appearing unsettled were playing good soccer and have certainly developed a lot toward being a contender rather than just easy three points to their opponents.
