Match Report: Renegades Stifle Storm

  • Game Day: Tuesday, September 22, 2009
  • Ohlone of Coast South Division, Non-Conference Match
  • Napa Valley College @ Ohlone
  • Napa Valley College 1, Ohlone 3

Ohlone was not bashful this late afternoon taking it Napa Valley Storm from the start. The game slated for a 4 PM kick got off late due to uncontrollable delays. After baking in the sun, the Renegades were ready to get down to business and the first kick presented Ohlone probing deep into Storm territory.

Knocking at the door early and perhaps forecasting things to come was freshman forward George Mayer II (Amador Valley HS). Mayer already with three goals and (3) assists was poised to add more to his tally today and he did just that. Early on Mayer was tossing right back Brian Ott around at will. His first chance came in minute one when he got around Ott and forced the Storm keeper off his line for a quick safe from Ohlone’s flank.

Moments later George would complete his first of three assists for the day, tagging sophomore forward Daniel Galloway (Irvington HS) atop the penalty box and Galloway would calmly place the ball on the deck into the lower right net. This combo was effective all day long, as they were in Ohlone’s recent games. Galloway added his fourth goal of the season in just two games.

The Storm moves in midway through the half, a quick kick off a soft foul from Ohlone’s right side near midfield splits back Saman Haidari, sophomore (Mission San Jose HS) and Sean Randall, freshman (Washington HS), at the top of the box, despite an exceptional effort from keeper Iman Aghel (Allaheh HS, Iran) Storm striker blows easy goal up the middle and now forces Ohlone to reignite its attack.

Mayer missed a chance for more glory after a shot was cleaned up not so neatly from a Sean Randall corner knocked to Mayer by Isac Ulloa, freshman (James Logan HS). Action in Ohlone’s attack was not restricted to a few, Dustin Richards, Sophomore (American HS) found an opportunity to help freshman Edgar Moncaleano off a neatly executed wall pass affront right post of Napa Valley, despite a well driven ball, Storm would weather another Renegade assault.

Half time finds the match level with play and possession on Ohlone’s side. The Renegades open immediately chasing Napa into their half, but NV holds tight. Napa would pressure Ohlone at the back but a foul by Napa gives, Renegade goalkeeper Iman Aghel (Allaheh HS, Iran) a chance to help and he gets a long boot to Ohlone’s second goal as his stunning punt delivers Mayer his second assist and Richards’ first goal of the season right up the eye of the Storm.

Aghel would not only have a second assist, but he would save two flashes of lightening from Julio Palavo, right foot as Napa fights to stay in the match. Despite tiring and the blazing sun, the Renegades out lasted the heat and Storm with a final salvo orchestrated by Mayer, now from the left wing hitting freshman Jarod Fluke (Washington HS) to blow away the Storms hopes of leveling the match before end of time.
