Match Report: Ohlone visits Monterey Peninsula, gets Ws

  • Game Day: Monday, October 12, 2009
  • Ohlone of Coast South Division, Conference Match
  • Ohlone @ Monterey Peninsula
  • Monterey Peninsula 0, Ohlone 2

The Renegades blew into town this cold rainy day looking for a “W”, and they got plenty, wind, wet, wild and the big “W”, the win.

Opening moments were the story for most of the half. Fighting both the turf, field equipment and furnishings driving across the field, Ohlone managed to dominate today’s match early and stayed in control. Conditions were dreadful as the Renegades were seeking to rebound from two recent stingers.

The Renegades played with gusto despite the gusting winds and sideways rain. George Mayer again starts the ball rolling, this time from the center midfield role feeding Dustin Richards with a slotted ball up the right flank for Richards’ first shot of three for the day.

The MPC Lobo’s were pinned to their half most of the game with Ohlone’s Jose Ulloa (MF) and Brandon Garcia (MF) both flanking Mayer and keeping the pressure on. Pierre Bruggeman was twined with Daniel Galloway and worked to get nice balls to the big striker.

Near mid way to the half, a smartly played ball was taken at the attacking third line by Galloway and the race was on as Galloway had a single pursuer, as Galloway entered the box he was taken down from behind forcing the match official to draw a yellow and point to the spot. Mayer promptly took to the task and buried the penalty kick ball with authority into the net. Ohlone’s confidence was now backed with a solid point.

As conditions worsened the Renegades gained in their own hurricane strength and would again capitalize off a Mayer assist from the right sided throw-in service which Bruggeman would now bury into the far left net.

Two goals would be enough to finish the game for Ohlone as school officials declared the game over due to worsening conditions. The match was abandoned after the half and Ohlone left with three more points and a lot of extra water weight, plus the “W”.
