Team News, 2009 Season - Ohlone College Renegades Men's Soccer

Match Report: Ohlone stifles De Anza

  • Game Day: Friday, October 23, 2009
  • Ohlone of Coast South Division, Division Match
  • Ohlone @ De Anza
  • De Anza 0, Ohlone 2

The Renegades’ mettle is tested and team gets passing grade. And today, at the artificial turf of DeAnza, passing was spot on by Ohlone for much of the game. Closing defensively was quick and meaningful. Finishing on goal was stunning.

Again the Renegades pushed right up to the door of the Dons' goal within moments of the kick forcing play out of bounds and setting Freshman George Mayer II, Amador Valley HS, for his first of six shots on goal, two of which found their mark today.

It was obvious that the turf would not be the challenge it was in Ohlone’s first couple of outings this season, whether it was the indoor training or just a good adaption to a familiar field Ohlone struck fast and hard in minute eighteen as a broken clearance from DeAnza’s side found Dustin Ricards, America HS, breaking down the right flank pelting a diagonal ball across the face of the goal where Mayer’s out reached foot buried the orb into the net and on to the scoreboard.

The Renegade side erupted and the intensity would go up a notch on both sides. DeAnza certainly would not go down or allow Ohlone to walk away with an easy victory.

Iman Aghel, sophomore keeper for Ohlone was forced on several occasions to remind all why he is so talented in the air, although only credit with five saves, his presence was artful and balanced as he came up with some big grabs from sky and also cleaned up neatly the hopeful thoughts and through balls by DeAnza.

Andrew Cota, Dons' midfielder was busy trying to even the score in the second half as Ohlone dropped into more of a defensive mode and packed the middle. Combination play by Dons' Tomohito Kondo and Cota almost resulted in couple of late goal opportunities, however, sophomore Renegade, Cody Nathan was being stingy in the defensive line and would clean out all intrusive balls and their attending players.

With twenty minutes left the decision was to let the strength of the Ohlone team lead the way and a more attacking shape developed forcing DeAnza to drop from their high pressure and try to keep Ohlone away from the Dons' goal.

The strategy paid off as a careless challenge middle of goal gave a direct free kick to Ohlone. Mayer would put the final stinger in the Dons' when he struck a knuckle ball form thirty five yards out that forced the starting keeper to mishandle the ball into the goal.

Ohlone takes first place in their division and certainly thoughts of post season play are very much alive for a side that has not been there in many many passing moons.
