The Renegades are approaching the stretch run towards the playoffs with a growing momentum that teams acquire with multi-game winning streaks. In Ohlone's case, the streak has grown to four after a home 2-1 win over Cabrillo on October 20 and a road 2-0 win at De Anza on October 23.
Dustin Richards scored the Renegades' first goal in the 18th minute of the Cabrillo game, converting a Cabrillo deflection inside the goal box. Ohlone went into the half with a two-goal advantage after George Mayer II hit the net from 16 yards out.
Cabrillo came out with more aggression in the second half, and the aggression paid off on a goal by forward Edgar Bedolla. The Seahawks kept up the attack, but the Renegades were able to stave off the threat and hold on for the 2-1 victory.
Mayer accounted for both goals in the 2-0 win over De Anza on the Dons' artificial surface. Mayer took a cross pass from Richards in front of the goal and deposited it into the net in the 18th minute. His second goal came from 35 yards out on a free kick following a De Anza violation late in the second half. The spin Mayer applied to the ball caused the Dons keeper to mishandle the shot.
Mayer is tied with Daniel Galloway for the team lead in goals - each have 10 - but Mayer's 12 assists are tops on the team and his 32 points rank him third in the state in scoring.
Following several frustrating seasons, the Mayer-Galloway combo has injected life into the Ohlone soccer team. The Renegades sit at first place, 6-2 in the Coast Conference and 10-4 overall.
