Team News, 2009 Season - Ohlone College Renegades Men's Soccer

Match Report: Ohlone routs Chabot

  • Game Day: Tuesday, November 3, 2009
  • Ohlone of Coast South Division, Conference Match
  • Chabot @ Ohlone
  • Ohlone 6, Chabot 2

Winning with decisiveness was the objective for Ohlone as they aligned themselves for post-season play. It was the only way for the team to prove themselves true contenders for post season play, and that is what they did this afternoon at home against visiting Chabot Gladiators.

The last time these two sides met Ohlone were sent home with an 8-3 spanking in 2008. Ohlone were not looking for public embarrassment nor pay back this time round. The objective was to establish presence keep the shape and maintain the game plan. And this is what the Renegades did.

Opening the opponents back line with George Mayer and Pierre Bruggeman down the flanks for crosses on to Galloway and the host of midfielders would fit that bill. Keep the shape in the mid field supporting the backs and forward, the rest would come.

Mayer would be one of the catalysts for sure as he sauntered past the back line and ripped cross after cross against the Chabot back line. But it would be Pierre Bruggeman, the freshman from Belgium who would provide the opening assist to Mayer off an in-swinging cross from the corner kick less than ten minutes into the match. Mayer’s precision finish was stellar as he took it from right flank and pounded all of it into the net.

Ohlone were fired up and surely some thought of last year’s match was on the mind of the few who suffered the blitz last year. Ohlone pushed hard and maintained good possession and pressure in midfield all game long.

Jonathan Santillam gave Mayer his second goal of the game as he expertly split the back line and found Mayer for his second of game. Freshman Brandon Garcia gave Mayer his hat trick on another precision pass up the middle as Mayer took the ball in stride and sunk the Gladiators hopes of a repeat performance from last year.

Ohlone’s Diego Montantes would get a tap in half two as Sean Randall’s bomb launched from the right touch line throw-in found the Chabot keeper too close to the post and Montantes would get the final touch into the goal. Sophomore Daniel Galloway added two to his season tally of 12 total goals, one with the help of Dustin Richards as a combination of short passes broke the Gladiator defense up the middle and Galloway scores on the run of play.

Although Ohlone scores seven goals, only five count for them and one goes to Chabot as an own goal returning the favor the Gladiators gave to Galloway on his last goal of the match for Ohlone.
