With a new academic year upon us at Ohlone College in Fremont and Chabot College in Hayward, each of the school's fall sports teams are prepping for a run at a championship in the fall.
For the Ohlone Renegades, the fall sports programs haven't seen the same success as the winter and the spring sports have seen in years past. However, there have been some improvements on one end, and a bit of a setback on the other.
The men's soccer team took a significant stride in the right direction in 2009, under new head coach Jan Nordmo, rebounding from an embarrassing 2008 campaign that saw them begin the season winless in the first 15 matches. In 2009, the Renegades went from bottom of the barrel to a possible playoff contender. However, Ohlone collapsed in the end, losing five of their last six, despite needing to win just one of their last three to qualify for the playoffs. They would end the season on a sour note, losing at West Valley, 9-0, in the regular season finale.
This season for the men's team looks promising as the Renegades will look to get over the hump and make the playoffs. The women's side of the pitch looked for their second consecutive trip to the playoffs, after going one-and-done in 2008, losing 3-2 to Modesto.
