Match Report: Renegades blanked for first time

  • Game Day: Friday, October 8, 2010
  • Ohlone of Coast South Division, Conference Match
  • Ohlone @ Evergreen
  • Evergreen 3, Ohlone 0

The Ohlone Renegades came out on a brisk Friday night to play against one of the top teams in California, Evergreen Valley College. The first half was spent primarily on defense. Ohlone fought hard, keeping up with the constantly moving midfield and forwards of Evergreen Community college.

The leadership out of the back from Ricardo, and the up and coming goalkeeper, Elmer Ceja, anchored a defense that was push on to their heals for the first 45 minutes.

Though the Renegade defense did find their forwards a few times with great opportunities to break the deadlock. Carlos Contreras and George Mayer played well up front combining with Jarod Fluke and Nicholas Sanchez-Torres for a few opportunities.

The 0-0 deadlock only held up till 2 minutes into the 2nd half, when Mario Contreras scored with his head on the back post from a free kick.

The Renegades seemed to have lost their focus for the split second, but got back to a solid defense and created even more opportunities to score. George and Carlitos each had 2 solid shots that had to be saved by goalkeeper Alan De Queros.

The score looked like it was going to stay 1-0, until in 82nd minute, Juan Gonzalez fought off a Defender and buried his first goal of the game after being stopped by Goalkeeper, Elmer Ceja, 5 times. This goal came just seconds after Nicholas was called offsides by the assistant referee, erasing what could have been the goal of the year for Ohlone.

Less than 4 minutes later, Gonzalez added to his total with another goal, when the ball was not cleared properly and he took Elmer on 1v1. It was a great finish.

Despite the score line Elmer Ceja showed why he was the starter for the game and showed a tremendous amount of maturity. He came off his line in the first half to stuff 2 great chances for Evergreen, and then again in the 2nd half coming off his line for 1v1s and for crosses. He seemed unstoppable after the 1st half. It was all for not, as Ohlone drops this one, and loses for the first time all year by being shutout.
