FREMONT—Ohlone College softball players and some some volunteers put the finishing touches on the four softball fields at the Fremont Softball Complex on Friday night.
"That builds camaraderie," Ohlone coach Donna Runyon said.
It sure helped Ohlone's effort Saturday in the March Madness Tournament, as the Renegades went 3-0 in Pool B and will play in the Gold Bracket against College of San Mateo today at 11 a.m. on Field 5.
Chabot went 2-1 and also advanced to the Gold bracket. It will face San Jose City at 11 a.m. on Field 4.
Chabot (4-13) only had to play two games because its third opponent—Los Medanos—bowed out of the tournament at the last minute. Chabot got credit for a victory because Los Medanos was also in Pool D.
"I'll take it," Chabot coach Chelsea Spencer said.
The two-day, 16-team tournament began Saturday with pool play. The top two teams from each pool advanced to the Gold Bracket today. The bottom two teams play in the Silver Bracket.
Ohlone (17-2) opened play with a 6-2 win over Porterville. Sophomore Tiffany Chan threw a complete-game, four-hitter and helped her cause at the plate with a two-run single in the third inning. The Renegades blew the game open in the fifth inning when Danielle Yee hit a two-run homer to center field to give Ohlone a 6-0 lead.
In the second game, Ohlone posted a 9-2 win over Yuba. Again, solid pitching led the way. Kristina Gonsalez recorded a complete-game six-hitter, yielding single runs in the first and third innings.
Gonsalez also helped her cause at the plate, going 2-for-3, with two runs scored and three RBIs. Her two-run single in the first gave Ohlone a 5-0 lead.
The Renegades opened the game with three straight hits and wound up scoring six times in the first.
Ohlone's Kassy Winger went 2-for-3.
Ohlone capped the day with an 11-3 win over Feather River in a game that was called after the sixth inning due to the eight-run rule.
Ohlone got another complete-game pitching performance. This one came from sophomore Isabel Ramos, who threw a six-hitter.
Ohlone's Valerie Briones went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Winger went 1-for-3 and had two RBIs. Raquel Torres went 2-for-3, scored two runs and had two RBIs.
Chabot opened action with a 9-7 win over College of the Redwoods. Brittany Valenzuela and Sarah Kaplan went 2-for-3 each, with Kaplan having three RBIs and triple.
In the second game, Chabot suffered a 15-0 loss to Solano. Amber Merrigan, Regina Martinez, Alexandria King and Stephanie Neal had one hit each for the Gladiators.
