SAN JOSE—The Ohlone College softball team blew a golden opportunity Saturday afternoon.
The No. 6-seeded Renegades had a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning but suffered a 7-6 loss to host No. 4-seeded San Jose City College in the Super Regionals of the Northern California playoffs.
The best-of-3 series continues today at noon at San Jose City. Should Ohlone win, that would force a second game at 2 p.m. with the winner advancing to the State Final Eight in Chino Hills next weekend.
Despite the loss, Ohlone (36-10) found out it can play with San Jose City (41-6), which is ranked No. 5 in the state.
In the regular-season finale on April 25, Ohlone couldn't muster any kind of offense against SJCC pitcher Debbie Duran in a 2-0 loss. Duran, who was named the Coast Conference South MVP, didn't have the same fortune this time.
Ohlone knocked Duran out of the game in the sixth inning when it scored four runs to take a 6-4 lead.
The big hit was delivered by Isabel Ramos, who hit a three-run double. Ohlone's Valerie Briones, Cassandra Ortega and Kassy Winger each had two hits.
"We have to go into thinking two games," Runyon said about today. "We have to be thinking that, and I know we can bounce back."
