March Madness was moved to Pleasanton Sports Complex at Pleasanton Sports and Recreational Park in Pleasanton on Saturday and Sunday, March 15 - 16, on fields 1, 2, 3, and 4 (the fields with lights). Apparently, there was a conflict with a men's tournament at Central Park in Fremont and the women, with the help of Fremont Park and Recreation Department, had to find another location for their tournament.
Directions to softball fields in Pleasanton
From Fremont/Milpitas: Take I-680 north to Stoneridge Drive, turn right at end of exit, proceed approx. 1 mile to Hopyard Road, turn right onto Hopyard, go approx. 1 mile to Parkside Drive, turn left onto Parkside, take first right into parking lot.
From Hayward: At the I-580 & I-680 interchange take I-680 south to Stoneridge Drive, turn left at end of exit, proceed approx. 1 mile to Hopyard Road, turn right onto Hopyard, then as above.
From Fremont's Central Park: turn right on Stevenson Boulevard, turn right on Mission Boulevard, go under I-680 and turn right onto loop and follow I-680 east then north to Stoneridge Drive.
This version of March Madness is in the form of women's softball. Sixteen teams from community colleges across Northern and Central California will participate in this two day tournament with each team playing three games on Saturday and from one to three games on Sunday.
Ohlone College of Fremont is hosting the tournament with Chabot College of Hayward also participating. This tournament will start out with four pools of four teams each. Pools, the teams and team locations are as follows:
- Pool A - Fresno City, Hartnell (Salinas), Lassen (Susanville), Sierra (Rocklin)

Games on Saturday will be played on all four fields starting at 9 a.m., 11a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Ohlone plays their three games on field #4 at 9 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., while Chabot plays on field #2 at 1 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m.
Sunday's games will be divided into two brackets, Gold (Championship) and Silver (Consolation). The top two teams from each pool after pool play Saturday advance to the Gold bracket with the bottom two teams to the Silver bracket. Teams from Pools A and B face off in the upper half of each bracket with A1 playing B2 and B1 playing A2 in the Gold bracket, while A3 plays B4 and B3 plays A4 in the Silver bracket. The lower half of each bracket has teams from Pools C and D facing off; C1 vs. D2 and D1 vs. C2 in Gold bracket and C3 vs. D4 and D3 vs. C4 in Silver bracket.
The four quarter-final games of the Silver bracket play at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 16, and the four quarter-final games of the Gold bracket play at 11 a.m. Then, at 1 p.m. will be the four semi-final games (two from each bracket) with the two finals at 3 p.m., Gold on field #3 and Silver on field #1.
Admission for these games is on a daily basis with adults being $6, minors (ages 6-17) and seniors $4, and kids (ages five and under) free. High school students with a pass and youth softball players in uniform are also free. You will need to get stamped if you want to re-enter. There is no charge for parking.
If women's softball is something you enjoy watching, then you can get your fill this weekend. All game times are Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). Bring a cap/hat and sun glasses for the early games and a jacket if attending the later games. Do not forget the sun screen as spring is just around the corner.
