FREMONT—Ohlone College pitcher Kelly Colker gave softball coach Donna Runyon win No. 700 in style.
Colker, a Newark Memorial High graduate, tossed a no-hitter, struck out 10 and faced one over the minimum (22) as host Ohlone posted a 7-0 win over visiting De Anza on Tuesday afternoon.
"I have to give credit to the kids," said Runyon, Ohlone's head coach since 1989 after a two-year stint as an assistant. "Without them, this wouldn't happen. Without the teams in the past, this wouldn't happen. I have to give the kids credit that have come through. They bought into our system. If they didn't buy into it, none of this is possible."
Ohlone (32-7, 19-0 Coast Conference) clinched the sixth straight conference crown for the Renegades.
Three years ago Runyon celebrated win No.600. And since 2002, Runyon's teams have won at least 30 games per year.
"This is special and fun to have a team to embrace it," Runyon said.
The field was littered with balloons and after the game, Runyon was recognized with a card signed by the players and a plaque.
After the ceremony, Runyon reminded her players that there are more goals on the table.
"We want to host regionals," she said. "Thank you very much, but we've got practice (today) and a game on Thursday. I think when I sit back, when it's all said and done, I could enjoy all the milestones. Right now it feels like numbers."
